October Backcountry with a Ranger

Horseshoe Canyon is a strenuous hike to significant North American rock art. There could be terrific fall colors in the cottonwoods in the canyon bottom. The history of this site is AMAZING.

In October, Canyonlands National Park, Maze District rangers will hike to the Great Gallery, as this panel is called, with visitors on Saturdays and Sundays and two bonus days around Columbus Day weekend in October. That is October 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30.

This seven mile hike is not easy. Wet crossings are possible.Part of the trail is in loose sand, the exit is a steep 800 feet ascent to reach the rim, and the hike could be cancelled for threat of rain. Rain may bring flash flooding and thunderstorms. Four wheel drive is necessary to reach this remote trail head. It is advised to check road conditions. Do not rely on GPS to get you to this trailhead. It is best to camp at the trailhead where there is a vault toilet. Bring food and plenty of drinking water, a gallon per person for the hike and more for camping. No pets are allowed. The ranger will meet folks at 9 AM at this spot.
