The site recently received 19,301 visitors, a record for a single day this year. There also has been a rise in foreign tourists at the caves, nearly twice the visitation compared to last year.
In 1987 the Mogao Grottos became China’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In recent years, visitation has increased to the caves (which are situated along the ancient Silk Road route) due to both increased awareness and easier transportation, including new trains from Beijing, and Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as well as flights from Guangzhou.
The Belt and Road Initiative has helped cement their reputation as an outstanding tourist site.
