"Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of Ho Chi Minh City Administration and its residents, I would like to extend my warmest greetings and best wishes to the distinguished leaders of countries, localities in and out of Viet Nam and all the distinguished guests present at the Opening Ceremony of the 11th Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Expo 2015 today.
Ladies and gentlemen, with over 300 years of establishment and development, Ho Chi Minh City has increasingly consolidated its position and role as a special metropolis of Viet Nam, and an important international gateway in the region and the world at large. Endowed with the richness and diversity of an economic hub, and coupled with the dynamism, creativity and enthusiasm of its residents, the City has now become an attractive, friendly, safe destination for both inbound and outbound visitors.
Over the years, the City has interested in developing a synchronized infrastructure for the tourism sector; diversifying and improving the quality of tourist products and services; utilizing new forms of travelling such as downtown river cruises. In addition, the City has taken the initiatives in organizing several distinctive well-known tourism events, which have now become annual events like Nguyen Hue Flower Street, Ao Dai Festival, Southern Region Fruits Festival, International Delicacies Festival, and Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Expo, etc.
Those events have helped present a dynamic image of Ho Chi Minh City featuring various unique characteristics to visitors, and concurrently, helped expand the City’s tourism markets and enhance tourism connectivity with other countries. The number of international visitors to the City has been on the rise. In 2014, the City received 4.4 million visitors. In the first 8 months of 2015, the City’s tourism sector has enjoyed a 5% growth compared with that of the same period last year, and accounted for 56% of the total visitors to Viet Nam. During 2006-2014, international visitors to the City made up, on average, 61% of the national number. Currently, the City’s tourism sector has contributed 11% to the City’s GDP. These impressive figures prove that Ho Chi Minh City has been one of Viet Nam’s leading attractive destinations for domestic and international travellers.
Ladies and gentlemen, the ITE-Ho Chi Minh City is a national tourism event of international magnitude and is directed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam and Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee. In this connection, it has been an honor and privilege for Ho Chi Minh City to be chosen as host of the event in the past 11 years. Over the years, thanks to the tremendous support and cooperation of our neighboring countries namely Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, the ITE-Ho Chi Minh City has become a brand name in the tourism industry not only of Viet Nam but also of all its brotherly neighboring countries in the Lower Mekong Sub-Region.
Following the successes of previous ITEs, the 2015 ITE under the theme “Viet Nam—Laos—Cambodia—Myanmar—Thailand: Five Countries, One Destination” undoubtedly continues to be a major gathering of travel businesses, offering many opportunities for information exchange and establishment of long-term cooperation and partnerships in the time to come. In particular, the Bilateral Ministerial Meetings between Viet Nam and ASEAN Tourism Ministers, organized within ITE are meaningful highlights as they are not only a new model of cooperation among regional countries through exchanges and connectivity, but also of great meaning in welcoming the launch of ASEAN Community by the end of this year.
Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the leadership of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam, the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Laos, the Ministry of Tourism and Hotels of Myanmar, the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Thailand as well as all the agencies and individuals participating in this event for the valuable support and cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City in organizing the ITE – HCMC over the years. Ho Chi Minh City also highly appreciates instrumental inputs by participating countries, international tourism organizations and local travel agencies as well as international media agencies.
