Beijing Makes History as it Wins Election to Host 2022 Winter Olympics

China’s capital city was selected to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, making it the first city in the more than 120 years of Olympic history to be awarded both the winter and summer games.

Beijing triumphantly hosted the summer games in 2008, making history with its breathtaking opening ceremonies and stunning venues including the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube.

This year’s International Olympic Committee employed a secret vote to decide upon the 2022 host city, ultimately choosing Beijing over Almaty, Kazahkstan.

The 2022 winter events will take place in Beijing, as well as at venues in nearby Zhangjiakou in Hebei province.

New high-speed rail lines to Zhangjiakou are in the works, cutting the travel time from Beijing to only 40 minutes.

The area has many snow-capped mountains, as well as ready-made ski trails and snow-manufacturing capabilities, plus existing ski resorts with international-level race courses, and even more hotels and restaurants under construction.
