The largest food festival in Latin America will be slicing, dicing, baking, barbequing and revelling all things food for ten days this September as farmers, chefs, confectioners, food lovers and culinary experts descend on Peru for the annual gastronomic festival, Mistura.
Held in Peru's culinary capital of Lima from 6-15 September 2013, the event will bring together leading chefs and thousands of foodies from around the world in a celebration of Peruvian culinary traditions and diversity.
Last year's festivities, focused around ancient Andean grains, attracted over 600,000 people. Now in its 6th year, Mistura 2013 will have a water and marine theme with seafood and small-scale fishing taking pride of place.
Dedicated themed corners will also highlight the country's world-renowned produce: bread, coffee, chocolate and of course Peru's flagship liquor, Pisco.
Visitors will have the opportunity to sample and savour local specialties from an array of street food and restaurant stands. The festival's Grand Market alone will showcase the fruits of the Pachamama (Mother Earth) from more than 250 producers.
Celebrated to the rhythm of music and dance, this cultural feast has a party atmosphere that features cultural performances in addition to cooking demonstrations and seminars.
Organised annually by The Peruvian Gastronomy Association (Apega) the festival not only reinforces Peru's identity, but also showcases the country's gastronomy at a time when Peru continues to attract global attention as a booming epicurean destination.
This year Mistura will coincide with the launch of Latin America's 50 Best Restaurants list. To be held on 4 September 2013 in Lima, restaurants from around Latin America will be critiqued by more than 250 Latin American restaurant industry experts as they compete for the inaugural awards.
Home to acclaimed chefs and award-winning restaurants, two of which made it onto the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurants list this year, Peru is fast becoming the world's most delicious and gastronomic nation. The destination is increasingly recognised for its culinary tours, food safaris, world class cooking schools and food fairs, and as such Peru was awarded the World's Leading Culinary Destination in the 2012 World Travel Awards.
