New Luxury Great Barrier Reef Island Resort in the works
Development on a new AUD$600 million luxury resort on the Great Barrier Reef has just been approved on Great Keppel Island. The planned resort includes a 250 room hotel, 750 villas, 600 apartments, a 250-berth marina and a Greg Norman-designed golf course. Great Keppel Island is located just off the Queensland coast and boasts 17 white sandy beaches and hard coral reefs with direct access off the island. The first stage of the Great Keppel Island eco-tourism resort will include a hotel, marina and airstrip. Tower Holdings plans to commence construction next year, with the first stage opening in late 2015, early 2016.

A new tour will give a first-hand insight into what a working lighthouse looks like on the inside. In a Queensland first, the still-operating Bustard Head Lighthouse, located north of the Town of 1770, is now open for public tours.1770 LARC Tours offers passengers exclusive access to the 145-year-old building as part of their Paradise Tour, a full-day excursion to the lighthouse, head lightkeeper's cottage and graveyard. Climb the original lighthouse stairs 19 metres to the balcony and take in panoramic views from Gladstone to 1770 and listen to the lighthouse caretakers recount stories of the colourful history. LARC's Paradise Tour takes off every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

Lady Musgrave Cruises
Lady Musgrave Cruises offer fully catered day trips to Lady Musgrave Island, the largest coral cay in the outer Southern Great Barrier Reef. In its third year, the Great Barrier Reef Swim will be held from 10-14 October, 2013. The event, held in partnership with Oceanswims.com, involves a competitive swim around the island for a distance of approximately 3km and also shorter course options. There is also a swim clinic and a range of social events as well. Heron Island will close in 2013 from early May to mid-June for a scheduled maintenance program.
