Anthony Das - Winner of 'Tukang Ulung Khas' 2012

March 22nd 2012 was a proud day for Anthony Das and Royal Selangor alike. Anthony was one of the recipients for the 'Tukang Ulung Khas' 2012 presented by His Royal Highness The Sultan of Selangor in conjunction with Hari Kraf Kebangsaan 2012, an award not only in recognition of excellence in craftsmanship but also dedication and commitment to the art of pewter making.

Born deaf and mute, Anthony had to struggle during his early days in Royal Selangor, where as an 18 year old apprentice, he had zero knowledge of what pewter was. However, time was on his side and he also had the desire and the will to learn. That was 30 years ago. Today, Anthony has acquired various skills such as shaping and bending, soldering, grinding, scrapping, sandblasting, fitting, finishing and reading technical drawings.

Some of the notable trophies and items hand assembled and finished by Anthony include the Sepang F1, Singtel Singapore F1, China F1, ATP trophy, CIMB golf trophy, Axiata Badminton trophy, Sepang motor GP trophy, maces for universities and RS 125th anniversary tea set. Although he has a demanding schedule to complete every order on time and at times, he feels pressured and stressed out, Anthony always maintains his composure and focus on the job at hand. Anthony relates well with his colleagues and superiors and he is the one whom others would want to work and spend time with.

After 30 years here in RS, Anthony's passion for the art of pewter making still burns strongly as he continues to strive to improve his skills and work methods as a mean towards better productivity and efficiency. He feels 'valued' as the company acknowledges the hard work he has put in all these years and this serves as a catalyst to push him to step up his performance and to contribute more for the company. He has no specific hobbies and in his free time, Anthony usually takes his wife and 2 adoring daughters out for a walk or to shopping complexes.

Beside the recent 'Tukang Ulung Khas' award, Anthony has also won the 'Yong Peng Kai' award in 2010, an award given to employees who exhibit exemplary behaviours. An exemplary employee is an employee who is worth his/her weight in gold.
