Tasmania has joined a prestigious list of Australia's most iconic destinations to be named Australia's fifteenth National Landscape by Tourism Australia and Parks Australia. Selected for the wild natural beauty of its pristine coastlines, ancient forests and stories of its people, places and heritage, Tasmania is now part of an illustrious and internationally recognised group of National Landscapes including the Great Barrier Reef, the Australian Alps, Kangaroo Island, Australia's Red Centre, the Kimberley and the Wet Tropics.
Mr Tony Mayell, CEO of Tourism Tasmania said. "Being part of the country's National Landscapes program is a fitting recognition of the diversity and quality of Tasmania's natural and cultural landscapes - with over 40 per cent of the land mass protected as National Parks, reserves and World Heritage Sites."
"Tasmania is one of the country's oldest cultural locations, rich in Aboriginal, colonial and convict history. We pride ourselves on our incredibly private, pristine beaches, temperate rainforests, majestic coastal cliffs and mighty rivers."
"We have worked hard to deliver increasingly sophisticated visitor experiences that allow exploration of this accessible isolation, and we are proud that our spectacular natural assets, combined with the integrity and strong environmental commitment of our tourism operators, has seen Tasmania recognised as one of the country's best National Landscapes," Mr Mayell concluded.
The National Landscapes program is a partnership between Tourism Australia and Parks Australia, promoting and showcasing Australia's most inspirational environments to visitors around the globe wanting to connect with world class nature and cultural experiences. Launched in December 2006, the National Landscapes Program identifies iconic Australian landscapes that capture and promote areas of outstanding natural beauty and cultural significance, and aims to protect Australia's natural and cultural experiences for the future.
