Centara’s first resort in Bali was Centra Taum Seminyak Bali, which is part of the company’s Centra value brand and opened in 2012, while the recently announced Centara Crystal On The Bay Nusa Dua, which is part of the core four-star brand, is due to open in December of this year.

“We are very proud indeed to be announcing the opening of Centara Grand Villas Nusa Dua Bali, which is designed as a very exclusive and secluded resort, while at the same time being in a prime location for all the attractions of Nusa Dua,” says Thirayuth Chirathivat, chief executive officer of Centara Hotels & Resorts.

“Bali holds enormous potential for Centara, and is a great strategic destination for us to continue our path of overseas expansion.”

There are 14 independent pool villas offering a choice of one, two or three bedrooms and set in an extensive garden area that provides privacy for guests.

The villas are designed in Peranakan style with spacious interiors, marble floors, and the rich tones of teak and rosewood furnishings, and each has its own private swimming pool complete with large sundeck, loungers and a pool shower.

Each of the One-Bedroom Luxury Pool Villas has a total space of 225 square metres, with an airy living and dining area flanked by an expansive garden with private pool and outdoor shower.

The Two-Bedroom Luxury Pool Villas can accommodate families and groups of up to four adults and three children in a minimum of 350 square metres of total space. Each villa features two spacious bedrooms, and two bathrooms with a shower and freestanding bathtub or Jacuzzi. The living and dining areas open onto a private garden with pool.

The Three-Bedroom Luxury Pool Villa provides over 680 square metres of total living space and is suitable for up to six adults and two children. The 75 square metre private pool is set in an expansive garden that also has an outdoor gazebo fitted out for massages and yoga lessons. The villa has three bathrooms, each with freestanding bathtub and separate shower.

All villas are Club class, which includes access to the Club Lounge with its complimentary servings, and an around-the-clock villa host service to ensure each guest will enjoy life in Nusa Dua to the full.

“With three properties on the island, offering three very separate and distinct Balinese experiences, we are in a very strong marketing position,” says Chris Bailey, senior vice president for sales and marketing at Centara Hotels & Resorts.

“Our initial property, Centra Taum Seminyak Bali, has proved to be an outstanding success in the brief time it has been open, and we are very confident indeed that Centara Grand Villas Nusa Dua Bali will attract the high end of the market and further enhance our profile amongst international travellers.”

The resort's all-day restaurant is The Long Table, open 24 hours a day and designed around a traditional long table, with chefs preparing Western and Asian cuisines at an open kitchen.

Ru Yi is for fine Chinese dining, preparing recipes from mainland China and Hong Kong, served in an opulent indoor environment or by the terrace with the resort’s main pool as a backdrop.

The bar is named 8 Degree Bar, designed in a British vintage style and serving cocktails together with a large selection of fine wines.

Traditional Thai and Balinese healing therapies that use local ingredients have inspired Spa Cenvaree’s extensive menu of treatments, while the adjacent fitness centre is open 24 hours a day.

A complimentary shuttle takes guests to Nusa Dua Beach, a few minutes away, where the resort has its own Beach Club, Taman Bhagawan, a collection of traditional Javanese timber buildings set in gardens and serving drinks and meals along with arranging beach activities, water sports, and excursions.

Despite its seclusion, the resort is within walking distance of Bali Nusa Dua Convention Centre, while the island’s airport is only a 15-minute drive away.

Centara Hotels & Resorts is Thailand’s leading operator of hotels, with 47 deluxe and first-class properties covering all the major tourist destinations in the Kingdom. A further 21 resorts in Maldives, Vietnam, Bali, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Ethiopia, Qatar, Laos and Oman brings the present total to 68 properties. During the tours, they will have interactive sessions with students from two local secondary schools, namely Sekolah Seri Puteri Cyberjaya and Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Alor Gajah.

Under the same project, Malaysia will also be sending 12 students and two teachers from Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor to visit Nara Prefecture in Japan from 6 to 18 November.

Dubai growing to be the epicenter of Family Tourism

Dubai has perched itself as one of the most coveted family tourism destination in the world. Family tourism has emerged as a major segment of the Islamic economy, accounting for as much as 12.5 per cent of the $1.07 trillion global tourism market in 2012. The size and potential of this market can be estimated from the fact that it is larger than the world’s largest conventional tourism market, the United States, which is only 11.4 per cent of the global market. The report has been released as part of the preparations for the 10th World Islamic Economic Forum, or WIEF, which will be organised by the Dubai Chamber and the WIEF Foundation in Dubai from October 28 to 30.

Highlighting the potential for the UAE market, the Dubai Chamber report says the UAE is ranked first on the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013 in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, category.

The UAE is positioned high in the new emerging travel market since family values are embedded in the UAE culture. In fact, the country ranked second globally based on criteria set by Crescent rating, a leading Muslim travel rating organisation based in Singapore, receiving a rating of 7.0, the report states. Saudi Arabia and Morocco also figure among the top global destinations with a rating of 6.5 and 6.4, respectively.

Meanwhile, the highest rating of 8.4 was awarded to Malaysia; this has helped the country attract over 170,000 visitors from the GCC alone in 2013. However, the report points out that unlike Malaysia, the UAE is both a top source of Muslim tourists, as well as a top destination, which naturally places it in a great position to become a hub for the global family-travel segment. Notably, Middle East and North Africa states account for seven of the top 10 family tourism-friendly destinations among OIC nations.

According to the report and Citing recent studies related to the Islamic economy, GCC nations contribute as much as 31 per cent to the total spending by travelers in tourism-related activities. This is despite the relatively low population in the region, which makes up just three per cent of the global Muslim population. Saudi Arabia is also one of the top source markets for family tourism, accounting for $17.1 billion in spending in 2012, the Dubai Chamber report said. While the UAE follows with spending worth $10.1 billion, travelers from Kuwait accounted for $7.4 billion in spending. Interestingly, the report has identified Iran as the leading source market in the Middle East with $18.2 in spending by its travelers.

The family tourism has grown in value from $137 billion in 2012 to $140 billion in 2013, and is expected to surpass $181 billion by 2018. Driven by population growth in Islamic nations and the healthy economic performance of these economies, industry experts forecast that family tourism sector will enjoy solid growth of 4.79 per cent annually until 2020 — higher than the global average of 3.8 per cent growth — reflecting its growing significance in the Islamic economy.

Mussel Rice in Huong River

Travelling to Hue, visitors not only enjoy the stunning view of the Huong River but also have chance to enjoy one of the best Vietnamese foods there. It is well known as Com Hen Song Huong (Mussel Rice in Huong River).

This dish is the very simple and a low-priced specialty of Hue, the ancient citadel of Viet Nam. It is a complicated recipe that includes sweet, buttery, salty, sour, bitter and spicy flavors. A serving of this special kind of food offers simplicity and deliciousness.

It has sweet-smelling flavours of rice, onion, and oil, as well as strange tastes of sweet, buttery, salty, sour, bitter, and peppery-hot. Visitors have to arrive to Hen river-islet in the Huong River to have the original of this food. However, travellers can find the dish on some streets in Hue City.

It requires 15 different raw materials to prepare the dish, including mussels, oil, peanuts, white sesame, dry pancake, salted shredded meat, chilli sauce, banana flower, banana trunk, spicy vegetables, peppermint, salad, etc.

This dish is always attractive to many customers since it is tasty and, at the same time, economical to anybody. What makes this simple kind of food popular is revealed in the great endeavor to adopt and process its main ingredient – mussel. Mussels are a sea species, which must be soaked in water for a long while before being processed.

Accordingly, people often say that mussel cooked rice somehow expresses the strenuous work of the maker.

It is very popular everywhere in Hue and these days, elsewhere in Hue restaurants in Viet Nam. More favourably, it is a low-priced specialty you can eat in luxurious restaurants in Hue or even by venturing to mobile shops on the streets.

“Visiting Hue you could not miss Mussel Rice in Huong River, or else you have not come to Hue ever,” is the most common remark to visitors.

INAUGURAL SYDNEY HARBOUR AND COAST WALK KICKS OFF

Ten keen walkers have set off on the inaugural Sydney Harbour and Coast Walk, packing extra socks for a four week 315km trek which will take in Palm Beach, Sydney Harbour, Parramatta, South Head, and the Royal National Park.

The route, developed and mapped over eight years by The Walking Volunteers in partnership with government agencies and local councils, takes in places of scenic beauty and historic interest, such as Bondi Beach and the Royal National Park south of Sydney.

Environment Minister Rob Stokes, who officially started and farewelled the first group of walkers, said, “This walk is a terrific way to enjoy the spectacular natural beauty across Sydney, which can so often be overlooked in the hectic pace of life.

“This initiative promotes healthy outdoor fun while opening up a host of valuable tourism opportunities that our environmental and heritage assets have to offer.”

Phil Jenkyn, of The Walking Volunteers said a lot of “blood, sweat and tears” had gone into making this dream walk a reality. But the effort had been well worth it.

“What other city in the world has such a fantastic and expansive harbour and river system, bordered with natural bushland, historic areas, maritime remnants and a modern city - all there to be experienced for free,” Mr Jenkyn said.

“We want people to use this foreshore walk, to enjoy it, to share it with visitors and friends, and to value and preserve this amazing treasure,” he said.

The walk can be done in small or large sections and is ideal for leisure walkers and families, or the health conscious and of course visitors who want to really explore the fantastic Sydney Harbour and coastal areas.

MALAYSIA: THE BEST FAMILY TOURIST DESTINATION

Malaysia was crowned as The Best Family Tourist Destination by renowned Lonely Planet India Travel Awards 2014 in Mumbai recently. The award is important for Malaysia as the country prides itself for being the perfect family holiday destination, offering wholesome entertainment activities for the entire family.

As there are more developments to promote family theme parks and entertainment centres, Malaysia is seen as family-friendly among tourists and locals alike. Family tour packages are also aplenty, especially for Langkawi, Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak.

Family vacations in Malaysia generally cover a mix of culture, nature, adventure and tonnes of fun. These could include a visit to wildlife sanctuary, national or state zoo, river cruises, cycling, snorkelling and fun time at theme parks and entertainment centres.

Every family member deserves a break

For the busy parents, a vacation in Malaysia is an opportunity to spend quality time with their children. This is the time to foster good family ties and instil family values through educational tours in a fun way. Malaysia has many national parks and zoos for a fascinating family holiday. In fact, the arrival of two pandas from China in the National Zoo is a new key attraction at the zoo.

The two 8-year old giant pandas are a loan from China to Malaysia to commemorate the 40-year diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The National Zoo covers 110 acres of land and is nestled only 5 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur city. An open concept zoo with 90% of its animals kept in spacious exhibits, the National Zoo boasts over 5,000 animals, including 476 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. Some of the attractions are the Insect Zoo, Amphibian World, Hornbill Centre, Reptile House, Malaysian Elephants, Lake Birds, Bird Aviary, Nocturnal Exhibits, Australian Plains, Humboldt Penguin, Children’s World, Bear Complex, Savannah Walk, Hippopotamus, Mammal Kingdom, Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium, Cat Walk and the Ape Centre. Visitors can also enjoy the multi-animal show featuring sea lions, macaques and macaws daily.

Fun-filled time at theme parks

According to Manoharan Periasamy, Director of Tourism Malaysia (India), the Lonely Planet award is recognition of Malaysia’s achievements in promoting the country as a leading ASEAN family destination. “The rapid development of various theme parks and children entertainment centres in Malaysia, such as Legoland, Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park, Kidzania, and i-City, to name a few, is a testament to the fact.”

Legoland Malaysia theme park, the first in Asia is located in Nusajaya, Johor. It is the sixth such parks in the world. Legoland Malaysia features over 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions, including the Miniland. Here, over 30 million Lego bricks are used in the building of world iconic landmarks, such as the Petronas Twin Towers, The Merlion Statue, Taj Mahal and others. Other attractions include Lego City, Land of Adventure, Imagination, Lego Kingdom and Lego Technic. The highest tower is the Observation Tower, aloft at 60 metres from the ground and is the third Legoland Observation Tower in the world.

Another new theme park which is a few minutes from Legoland is Puteri Harbour Theme Park. This four-storey indoor them park consists of Sanrio Hello Kitty Town, The Little Big Club and a cartoon-themed restaurant, Lat’s Place. The main attraction at the Sanrio Hello Kitty Town is the Black Wonder, an interactive experience which enables children to find Hello Kitty and Dear Daniel who were kidnapped. Family members can take a nice family shot together at the Kitty House which is home to Hello Kitty. Pose with the bedroom, living room, kitchen and other rooms.

To further thrill visitors, check out the indoor playground, Tea Cups ride and the stage featuring Hello Kitty shows and parades. Meet Hello Kitty live and take a snap shot with it and other Sanrio characters.

Next is The Little Big Club dedicated to Pingu, Barney, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. Pose with Angelina Ballerina, play at Barney’s Playhouse and meet Little Big Club characters. If that is not enough for your children, take some fun rides, such as the Windmill Ride, Colin Crane Drop Ride, Harold Helicopter ride, Bertie the Bus ride, dodgems and a Thomas train ride.

More for the family. Quality time together.

Apart from Legoland and Puteri Harbour Theme Park, another interesting destination is KidZania. This is the place where your children can realise their dreams of being grown-ups. KidZania is about real-life experience, empowering, inspiring and educating children through role-play. Children can play in replica of a real city complete with shops, streets and buildings made and run by other children. Malaysia is one of the eight nations where the award-winning KidZania theme park was established since its first set-up in Mexico in 1999. Children aged 4 to 14 can choose from 90 authentic role-playing activities, from surgeons and pilots to fashion models and hair stylists. For toddlers aged 3 and below, they can enjoy story-telling and puppet shows, games, colouring books and puzzles.

i-City is another interesting theme park to explore. It is a city of digital lights, the first lightscape tourism destination in Malaysia with state-of-the-art LED technologies. What is intriguing about i-City is the night will be transformed into a fairy wonderland of lights with formation of trees, chariots, fairies, animals from LED lights. Apart from it, Malaysia’s all-stars interactive museum is also located in i-City. Meet and capture a photo with your favourite stars, from Korean pop star - Psy, King of Rock - Elvis, King of Pop - Michael Jackson, Mr Bean to President Obama and Jackie Chan. Visitors can also check out The Trick Art Museum in i-City featuring 3-D art with Egyptian, Sea Life, Animal Kingdom themes. Each display looks different when seen from different angles. Other interesting places in i-City include the Snowalk, the biggest man-made snow wonderland with ice sculptures and rides in Malaysia and the Waterworld which features Tornado Ride and many exciting water activities.

Besides KidZania and i-City, other popular theme parks are Sunway Lagoon, Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, Desa Water Park, Asian Water Sports Village Puchong, A’Famosa Theme Park, Lost World of Tambun and more.

New water adventure park for a splashing good time. One of the latest attractions for all families is the Wet World Wild Adventure Park. It is the first-of-its-kind open seawater adventure park in Asia reminiscent of popular American challenge game show, Wipeout. Located in Batu Ferringhi, Penang, the Wet World Wild Adventure offers a number of obstacle courses in the form of inflatable floating features in the water for visitors. These features are nearly the same with what you see on-land adventure parks, such as the rock climber, running tracks and trampoline but the difference is all of them are on the water.

With so many exciting holiday destinations, bring your family over for a fun-filled quality time together. After all, Malaysia is Lonely Planet’s choice for the Best Family Tourist Destination.
