Authorities in Bình Định Province have requested VNĐ344 billion (US$14.6 million) to restore and promote sites of national cultural heritage in the province.

The proposal has just been sent to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Ministry of Finance, and is awaiting approval.

Restoring the Dương Long Tower in Tây Sơn District, which was listed as a national relic in 2015, will cost about VNĐ65 billion.

According to French archaeologist Henri Parmentier, Dương Long Tower was built around the end of the 12th century and has important historical significance.

The cost of displaying furniture and artefacts at Bình Định Museum, as well as building the Bình Định Traditional Martial Arts Centre, is expected to cost VNĐ80 billion and VNĐ60 billion, respectively.

In 2012, Bình Định martial arts was recognised as a National Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The Bình Định Department of Culture and Sports and the Department of Cultural Heritage is working on an application to UNESCO for the martial arts to be recognised as a world cultural heritage.

Improving the technical infrastructure of Bánh Ít Tower Complex (Tuy Phước District), Thủ Thiện Tower (Tây Sơn District) and Phú Lốc Tower (An Nhơn Town) is also planned, with an investment of VNĐ25 billion, VNĐ15 billion and VNĐ20 billion, respectively.

The Bánh Ít Tower Complex was classified as an architectural and art monument by the Ministry of Culture and Sports in 1982.

The tomb of the famous Tuồng artist Đào Tấn (Tuy Phước District) and the Imperial Citadel are also included in the restoration plan, along with many other sites in Bình Định.

According to Lâm Hải Giang, Deputy Chairman of Bình Định Provincial People's Committee, restoring the province's heritage sites is of utmost importance.

“Although Bình Định's cultural, historical heritage and tourist landscape resources are rich and diverse, investment in these sites has not matched their historical significance,” Giang said.

“One of the difficulties is due to the deterioration of this system. A lack of capital for investment, poor conservation, and promotion of these heritages are also limitations.”

According to the Bình Định Department of Culture and Sports, the province has 133 ranked relics, including two special national monuments, 34 national-level monuments and 97 provincial-level relics.

However, most of them have degraded over time.

Stepping stone: Sandbox schemes a prelude to opening up Kingdom

The government has embarked on a “roadmap” towards restoring and promoting tourism in Cambodia during and after the Covid-19 crisis.

Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth said yesterday that the special sandbox scheme to allow quarantine-free visits to Sihanoukville, Koh Rong and Dara Sakor from November 30 was only a first step in the overall strategy to gradually reopen the country to international visitors.

He said the sandbox scheme will be closely monitored and evaluated and, if successful, will lead to the opening up of the whole country for quarantine-free visits.

Pornmoniroth said that looking at the overall tourism market after the outbreak of Covid-19, the international and regional international tourism movement has changed with emphasis now on high consideration for safety, confidence in destination selection and use of technology and innovation in tourism, both in demand and supply.

He said that in this context, the strategic plan on the opening of vaccinated tourism and policy measures to promote the internal tourism movement from 2021-2023 is based on the principle of maintaining a balance between socio-economic activities and ensure safety and public health for citizens and tourists.

Pornmoniroth noted that after Sihanoukville, Koh Rong and Dara Sakor, the sandbox scheme will be extended to Siem Reap province in January, also as part of the overall strategy.

He also requested to the Ministry of Tourism and the private sector to continue their efforts to attract target tourists from safe and low-risk international market sources, as well as to diversify tourism products and services in line with the new context of the needs and supply of international and domestic tourism markets.Tourists visit Preah Khan temple. Pornmoniroth urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote activities on “tourism diplomacy” by promoting cooperation with countries that are the main sources of tourism markets in Cambodia.

He also ordered the capital and provincial administrations to prepare various tourist destinations within their jurisdictions to be attractive and safe destination to attract domestic and international tourists.

In a statement issued yesterday, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the reopening of Cambodia to international visitors would be done step-by-step, starting with vaccination tourisms at the end of next month.

He said that for the past 18 months, the Covid-19 crisis has brought disaster to the whole world, in which global tourism, as well as in Cambodia, has been negatively affected seriously.

“This has caused countries around the world to open and close many times as large-scale vaccination campaigns are being carried out to build resilience in the community to promote socio-economic recovery in line with the new normal trajectory,” said Mr Hun Sen.

He said that based on the vision of “thinking about the people, thinking about the economy, thinking about the future”, the government has adhered to proactive and pragmatic policies, with a clear plan to restore and promote Cambodia’s tourism.

“The reopening of international tourism will be done in stages, based on specific methods of identifying areas or destinations for safe tourism, as a function and rate of vaccinations, the infections and deaths rates to respond to and manage potential risks from new viruses and the readiness of the Cambodian tourism industry in line with the new normal trajectory in the Kingdom,” he said.

Mr Hun Sen’s statement comes after Cambodia recently announced the resumption of direct flights from three Asean countries – Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia – and after he ordered relevant ministries to look into reciprocating Thailand’s initiative to reopen the country, quarantine-free, for fully-vaccinated air passengers from Cambodia and other selected countries.

MCEC ready and raring to rebound following challenging year

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is emerging from a period of rebuilding, after a challenging 2020/21 financial year, owing to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Despite extended closures due to lockdown, MCEC’s annual report for 2020/21 shows a positive economic impact of $49 million to Victoria. However, MCEC hosted just 154 events at the venue, a major reduction on pre-pandemic levels at around 1,200 events per year.

Now, as the award-winning venue emerges from closure and the cancellation of hundreds of planned events, the organisation is ready to emerge stronger and ready for a new normal.

Peter King, Chief Executive of MCEC, said MCEC took the opportunity to rebuild and reset while its doors were closed.

“While we couldn’t run and plan events as usual, our business has focused on exploring new ways to succeed in a post-COVID world, by testing a new operating model and finding new revenue streams, partnerships, and opportunities to contribute to Victoria’s economic and social recovery,” Mr King said.

In February MCEC celebrated its 25th anniversary, a significant milestone for a venue that has hosted well over 20,000 international, national and local events and been a major driver of economic activity and thought leadership.

MCEC continued to deliver on its Sustainability Plan 2016 – 2021 as well as develop and implement a new five-year sustainability strategy which acknowledges the need to futureproof the business and meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Commercial and community partnerships were a key focus in FY 20/21 which included:
  • Working with the Victorian screen industry, including Film Victoria, to host the production of the major film ‘Blacklight’, starring Liam Neeson.
  • Partnering with Village Cinema to transform exhibition bays into Australia’s first indoor drive-in cinema.
  • Entering into a long-term partnership with art and culture company Grande Experiences making MCEC the permanent home to THE LUME Melbourne, an immersive digital gallery and event space.
  • Partnering with TEG Live and Brickman® delivering the ‘Jurassic World by Brickman®’ exhibition to MCEC.
  • Supporting Guide Dogs Victoria by providing a safe, contained and free-of-charge space to train Guide Dogs, to ensure people with low vision or blindness could continue to receive essential services during restrictions.

Since March, MCEC has been proud to host one of Victoria’s flagship vaccination centres and play an important role in vaccinating our population, to assist with a faster recovery of the economy and the business events industry.

“Taking partnership approach has helped us to successfully navigate a very challenging time,” Mr King said.

“We have learnt a lot along the way and as always it has been our people who set us apart, and our people who will lead the way in the year to come.”

Countdown to Colorado Ski is ON!

With Australian citizens and residents able to travel to the USA from next week, there's hope that we can see some snow during the northern hemisphere's 21/22 ski season.

Some resorts officially opened last weekend and Colorado can't wait to welcome back Aussies in the coming months. While the state's renowned resorts offer the same quality powder, hotels and attractions that we've fallen in love with in the past, there's plenty of new and enhanced experiences to make a Colorado snowcation worth the wait.

What's new on the snow scene this winter?
  • Beaver Creek Resort will add 250 acres of lift-served, welcoming ski terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers, McCoy Park is the resort's newest family-friendly learning area, which will offer 17 trails of natural, groomable glades.
  • Winter Park will offer guests sunset guided skiing and riding experiences, new this season.
  • Aspen Art Museum will be home to an Andy Warhol: Lifetimes exhibit on 3 December, the only place it will be shown in the USA, while the town will also unveil the Herbert Bayer Center with a soft opening in December and grand opening in June 2022, which will focus on preserving and honouring the art of Bayer. Bayer, whose work is an iconic expression of the Bauhaus movement in America, influenced the foundations of modern Aspen. For a piece of art to take home with you this season, Aspen Snowmass has announced the 21-22 Winter Season Lift Tickets will feature Paola Pivi's colourful polar bears (pictured below). Visitors can also spot Pivi's art installations across the resorts and in the Aspen Art Museum and get their hands on limited edition Aspen Snowmass merchandise with the bear designs.
  • Loveland will offer Snowcat tours in Dry Gulch, a new guided backcountry experience. The entire snowcat can be booked for groups as well as individual seats.
  • Copper Mountain is launching the Western Territory, an area on the resort's western-most side dedicated to inspiring beginner skiers and families to connect with Copper's heritage. It will include two adventure zones, two new trails and a connector trail that offer skill development and animation to help families who are learning the sport.
  • Telluride will provide guests with 40 new acres of beginner and intermediate skiing, including the new Grouse Glades.
  • Purgatory Resort has launched a new free season pass for children aged 12 and under. Power Kids is the only season pass in North America that grants free unlimited skiing and riding to children under 12 with no blackout days or purchase required.
  • New this winter, United is making it easier for visitors to travel to Breckenridge and Fort Collins with year-round ground transport and baggage transfer connecting through it's Denver hub.

Enhancing connectivity and flexibly adapting to "break the ice" to restore tourism

Mr. Ha Van Sieu, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam
 National Administration of Tourism
On October 14, the online seminar "Restoring and developing tourism in a new normal condition" was organized by Nguoi Lao Dong (Labour) Newspaper in cooperation with related units.

The seminar took place in 2 sessions. The first session has the theme “Tourism hit the bottom" to discuss the overall of the tourism industry in the past and present; the current situation of tourism in the localities; the difficulties of tourism and aviation enterprises. The second one with the topic "proposing solutions" is aim to discuss the models that can be deployed right at this time when the pandemic is gradually being controlled to "break the ice" for tourism; summarizing suggestions of businesses and localities to restore tourism.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), Mr. Ha Van Sieu said that in the two years 2020-2021, a series of tourism businesses have severely affected and fallen into a more difficult situation than ever. Hundreds of international travel businesses applied to revoke their licenses, 90% of travel businesses closed. The passenger transport businesses have been also not excluded from this impact.

In the accommodation sector, room occupancy in the first 6 months of 2021 was below 10%, especially very low in tourist centers. From 2021, the number of operating establishments only accounts for 25% of that of 2020; many workers temporary without job; and number of moderate workers accounts for only 10%. The number of hotels for sale is increasing.

The tourism is a vulnerable service industry compared to other industries. It involves the movement of people with usual density and high interaction, so it is easy to be immediate impacted. The overall picture shows the serious damage of the tourism industry.

Many localities are ready to welcome tourists safely and flexibly

Mr. Le Huu Hoang - Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee said that Khanh Hoa has built a plan to reopen for tourists, control and flexibly prevent the Covid-19 pandemic. The province has fully prepared resources and detailed plans to restore tourism in the locality, paid attention to supporting businesses to overcome difficulties, ensuring the quality of tourist areas, ensuring the safety of tourists and residents. Khanh Hoa also coordinates with the aviation, railway and port industries, and cooperates with localities to restore tourism activities.

With Quang Nam Province, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Tri Thanh said that in the coming time, the province will focus on vaccination, especially in Hoi An and other key destinations. Currently, Quang Nam is gradually preparing to reopen for tourists from the yellow and green zones in November. The province also cooperates with Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City to exploit domestic tourism according to the plan.

With Ho Chi Minh City, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, Director of the Department of Tourism, said that the city's tourism industry is preparing for the restart of tourism. The city has developed a restoration plan in three phases. In the first phase in October, tourism is deployed for local; phase 2, the city works with adjacent localities to prepare inter-provincial tourism in November; and a draft project to welcome international visitors in phase 3.

Regarding the pilot plan to welcome international visitors to Phu Quoc Island, Ms. Quang Xuan Lua, Deputy Director of Kien Giang Tourism Department said, to be ready to reopen international tourism, the province completes the first dose of vaccination and continues the second dose for local people in October. It is expected that by the end of November, it will be able to welcome tourists. The province's tourism industry also plans to support to reduce costs for businesses, implement promotion and communication to welcome guests conveniently. Currently, some flights have been reopened such as Phu Quoc - Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc - Rach Gia City preparing to restore the tourism activities.

Tourism businesses attending the seminar informed that the Covid-19 pandemic impacted seriously on tourism, the tourism businesses were almost unable to operate. However, businesses have also taken steps to prepare plan to recover as soon as tourism is reopened.

Vo Anh Tai, Deputy General Director of Saigontourist, said that since mid-September, Saigontourist has also sponsored and successfully organized 10 gratitude tours in Can Gio, Cu Chi on serving more than 1,100 frontline doctors in the fight against the pandemic. Saigontourist has also prepared specific business plans with the goal that products and services must ensure safety and quality.

General Director of Vietravel, Mr. Tran Doan The Duy shared that during the difficult period affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, the company has developed new products to adapt to new requirements, and focused on safety factors: safe destinations, safe services. The company works with Ho Chi Minh City and other localities to prepare for tourism. He also identified that the linkage between localities is very important for recovery, because tourism is an inter-regional and interdisciplinary industry.

Representative of Vingroup informed that Vingroup's resorts are ready to welcome guests back. The resorts will continuously improve the guests’ experience, especially the application of artificial intelligence, of which a smart butler application will be launched, Q&R on restaurant information, etc. At the same time the Group prepares many new products to serve tourists, such as tourist submarine with 360-degree transparent infinity to admire the beauty of the sea, and many other attractive entertainment activities.

Speaking at the seminar, Editor-in-Chief of the Labor Newspaper, Mr. To Dinh Tuan emphasized that it is necessary to closely connect with localities and businesses to "break the ice", restore and develop the tourism industry sustainably.

Tourism industry focuses on 4 directions to restart tourism activities

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST), had a speech to the seminar. He said that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has directed the tourism industry to deploy flexibly, adapt, and focus resources to develop a scenario to restart tourism activities, which focuses on 4 orientations:

Firstly, the industry identifies priority to domestic tourism considered as a basis for tourism recovery. It is necessary to survey and properly assess the current situation and the needs of tourists, redesign tourism products with specific features and suitable for customers' needs in the new situation.

Secondly,
restarting tourism in a green and safe direction, towards closeness to nature and regional cultural values, focus on localities that are safe and well controlled pandemic.

Thirdly, accompanying with businesses in proposals to the Government to have supportive policies; together with enterprises to stabilize labor resources in the industry, re-engagement of workers, organize training for this important human resource.

Fourthly is to focus on digitization and technology application. This is a mandatory requirement.

Besides promoting domestic tourism, the Minister also said that currently the MOCST is coordinating with related ministries, sectors and localities to prepare a pilot plan to reopen international tourism in Phu Quoc Island. Afterward, the ministry considers continuing to expand to other eligible locations.

New Booking.com research reveals the Trans-Tasman love of cricket and summer holidays as travel restrictions ease

  • Over two thirds of Kiwi (67%) and Aussie (64%) sport fans agree that cricket is something they look forward to doing the most in their summer holidays
  • The love for the game will see us travel again in 2022. 69% Kiwis and 62% Aussies say that they would travel with their family to watch a cricket World Cup match
  • 81% of respondents in both Australia and New Zealand agree that playing cricket is a quintessential part of their summer holiday experience - for some even more important than finally catching up with mates for a post-lockdown BBQ
As Australia and New Zealand play on at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, Booking.com, the official Accommodation Booking Partner for the tournament, has released new research revealing what ANZ sport fans feel about cricket and its connection to summer travel.

With travel restrictions continuing to ease throughout Australia and New Zealand, the research highlights how eager these nations are to get outdoors and bat their summer holidays for six again. Over two thirds of Kiwi (67%) and Aussie (64%) sport fans agree that cricket is something they look forward to doing the most in their summer holidays, taking precedence over even getting the BBQ out with mates post-lockdowns.

  • Cricket is one of the top 5 activities Kiwi and Aussie sport fans are looking forward to this summer:
  • Going to the beach – 56% (AU), 50% (NZ)
  • Traveling and exploring different parts of my home country again - 46% (AU), 46% (NZ)
  • Catching up with friends over some drinks – 46% (AU), 45% (NZ)
  • Going to cricket match - 42% (AU), 41% (NZ)
  • Barbequing at a holiday home / beach – 36% (AU), 40% (NZ)

Conducted with over 1631 Australian and New Zealand sport fans, the research highlights attitudes towards cricket and travel preferences, as well as how the traditional Trans-Tasman, England and India rivalries play a part in the love and celebration of the sport.

Cricket and Summer Travel
According to the research, an overwhelming majority of Kiwi and Aussie sport fans (both 81% of ANZ respondents) agree that playing cricket is a quintessential part of their summer holiday experience.

Given this love for the game, and how sporting events have created travel recovery moments in the past months, the research highlights how this year’s ICC in the UAE followed by the 2022 Womens and Mens tournaments to be held across Australia and New Zealand in 2022 will support the region’s travel resurgence.

It’s heartening to know the love for a game will see us travel again in 2022. 69% of Kiwi and 62% of Aussie sport fans say that they would travel with their family to watch a cricket World Cup. And such is the love for the game that a substantial percentage of people also say that they are likely to travel to a destination for cricket even if it is not in their travel bucket list – 59% (NZ), 54% (AU).

Cricket Passions and Rivalries
Central to their wider cricket viewing and playing experience, the respondents said cricket as a game not only unites, but also is integral to who we are. Perhaps it is this sense of nostalgia and emotional connection with our summer holiday experience that go beyond cricket team rivalries - close to 7 in 10 say that they are likely to watch a cricket match with someone who is supporting a rival team Aussies (68%) and Kiwis (68%).

The passion runs deep for our cricket loving nations, with the research highlighting surprising attitudes toward making plans to see a game:
  • 60% of Kiwi and 59% of Aussie sport fans say that they are the most passionate cricket fans in the world
  • More than half (53%) of Kiwi sport fans are likely to take unpaid leave from office to watch a live Australia versus New Zealand match
  • Moreover, 51% of Kiwi sport fans say that they would cancel a pre planned catch up with friends to watch a key rival match and 50% say that they would call in sick at work when their favourite team is playing
  • 44% of Aussie sport fans are likely to take unpaid leave from office to watch a live Australia versus New Zealand match and a similar number of Aussies are likely to cancel pre planned catch up with friends to watch a key rival match

What Legendary Rivals Say
To provide further credence into how deep our nation's cricket rivalries run, Booking.com spoke to former cricketers, Mitchell Johnson (AU) and Ross Taylor (NZ), to get their perspective:

Mitchell Johnson said “Cricket and travel are a quintessential part of an Aussie summer. Whether you’re playing in your backyard, watching with mates, or even travelling somewhere to watch it live, it doesn’t get any better than watching two rival teams battle to be the best. It’s a sport known to bring people together, and what better time to come together than as we start to open up and travel again.”

Ross Taylor said “Cricket has been enjoyed by generations of Kiwis, whether watching a match together or picking up a bat for a game in the backyard. Whether it’s playing against your mates or family, or getting together to watch a game of cricket on TV or in person at a stadium, the friendly rivalry of the game is something I’m sure many Kiwis are looking forward to as we hopefully reunite with family and friends this summer.”

  • 40% of Aussies say the laid-back, friendly nature of Australia makes travelling domestically a refreshing experience as a similar portion (38%) feel they’ve only touched the surface when it comes to Aussie travel*

Wotif has announced the winners of this year’s Uniquely Aussie Awards, with Kakadu and Litchfield named as the best two national parks in Australia, as nominated by Aussies.

Dual UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park has been voted Australia’s top national park, thanks to its rich cultural history, incredible wildlife and sweeping landscapes, spanning from lush rainforests to wandering wetlands and stone country.

Litchfield National Park is awarded the national runner-up. Litchfield, a 90-minute drive south from Darwin, is famous for its magnetic termite mounds, pleasant bushwalking trails and crystal-clear swimming holes that are accessible year-round.

With Northern Territory entering Tropical Summer, there’s no better time to visit these incredible natural spaces. During this period, the Top End is transformed to a lush green, creeks and floodplains overflow into waterfalls, and wildlife is more abundant than ever.

Leading travel site Wotif.com announces the winners of this year’s Uniquely Aussie Awards – the annual guide to Australia’s best local secrets, as nominated by Aussies.

Celebrating quintessential Aussie travel experiences across six categories, the awards highlight the unique joys synonymous with local travel – hot chips on the beach, regional bakeries serving up nostalgic baked goods, country pubs full of colourful characters, and stunning hotel pools in iconic Aussie settings. In addition, this year’s awards also set out to profile the many local legends, businesses and attractions that make communities tick and represent what travelling in Australia is all about.

Now in their fourth year, the awards aim to encourage Aussies to explore their own backyard and support their favourite businesses – more relevant than ever following the continued challenges faced by the tourism and hospitality industries over the past 18 months.

Kakadu National Park
For the nearly four in 10 Aussies (38%)* who feel that they have only touched the surface when it comes to Australian travel, the promise of eased travel restrictions this summer means that, whether you’re looking to taste test the country’s best hot chips, or relax in a cabana beside a hotel pool, it’s a great time to get out and explore the underrated gems that Australia does best.

Raking in thousands of nominations from all over the country, it’s clear the little things in life often stir the greatest debate. Whether you prefer chicken salt or gravy on your chips, call it a snot block over a vanilla slice, or demand a savoury rather than sweet jaffle, this year’s awards continue to uncover some of Australia’s best kept local secrets.

Wotif 2021 Uniquely Aussie Award National Winners –

  • Best Jaffle: Miss Jaffles, Cronulla, NSW – With 15 different jaffles on the menu, there’s one for every occasion, like the Miss Pizzeria or the decadent dessert jaffle Miss Biscoff – think caramilk, biscoff, strawberries and ice cream with the crimped toasted bread we all know and love.
  • Best Vanilla Slice: Bridgewater Bakehouse, Bridgewater on Loddon & Bendigo, VIC – Melt in your mouth goodness can be found at Bridgewater Bakehouse, with their famous vanilla slice offering the perfect ratio of silky-smooth custard and crisp (never soggy) pastry, topped with a “can’t help yourself” layer of icing.
  • Best Country Pub: Beechwood Hotel, Beechwood, NSW – It’s all about the people you meet when visiting a country pub, and Beechwood Hotel is said to be at the heart of its community. With friendly service, great food and a true-blue history (if you feel like ditching the car, there’s a spot out front for your horse), this humble pub offers some of Australia’s best country hospitality.
  • Best Hot Chips: Chicken Chef, Blair Athol, SA – Said to have mastered the crispy on the outside, soft on the inside requirement of any good hot chip, Chicken Chef’s “mouthwatering” hot chips and famous salt are beloved by locals. The secret to their winning recipe? No short cuts. Hand-made with the freshest potatoes and double cooked for that signature crunch.
  • Best Hotel Pool: JW Marriott Gold Coast Resort & Spa, Gold Coast, QLD – The “magical lagoon” at this Gold Coast resort is anything but your average hotel swimming pool. Whether it’s snorkeling with tropical fish, gliding down the waterslide or cocktails in your cabana, everyone’s a winner here.
  • Best National Park: Kakadu National Park, Jabiru, NT – Australia’s largest national park is also the best according to Aussies, thanks to its historical and cultural significance, beautiful scenery and incredible wildlife. A “truly spectacular experience” that every Aussie needs to do.

Wotif Managing Director, Daniel Finch said: “Country charm, cheesy jaffles and creamy vanilla slices – no one does them quite like Australia, and the thousands of nominations we received this year shows Aussies are a passionate bunch. There’s so much to love and discover about Australia, and with a really exciting summer period ahead, we hope to inspire and encourage Aussies to plan their next adventure and support local businesses.”

While everyone thinks their favourite haunt is the best, there are a few things it seems all Aussies can agree on:
  • Move over vegemite: vanilla slices are the unofficial delicacy of Australia, and perhaps most contentious, generating the largest number of nominations.
  • If the vanilla slice doesn’t “melt in your mouth” from the first bite, you’re not doing it right. The “creaminess of the custard” and the “flakiness of the pastry” needs to be spot on. Size really does matter, with Aussies wanting a slice that’s “big enough to share” (not that you'd want to).
  • The humble Aussie jaffle has sure come a long way. These days, it’s all about variety, with “cool flavour combos” and “fancy fillings” the deciding factor between amateur and gold-tier status.
  • When it comes to country pubs, “country characters” and “solid vibes” are mandatory. Good, cold beer on tap and a schnitty certainly don’t hurt either, along with flat screens to show the footy.
  • The best hot chips have got to have that crunch factor while remaining fluffy on the inside, of course. As for size? While thin chips were slightly more popular, what Aussies are really after is the goldilocks of chips, “Not too thin, but not too fat”.
  • As for national parks, this is where Aussies really showed their pride, appreciative of the country’s incredible natural spaces, sometimes scary wildlife, and rich cultural history.

Finch continues: “With an increased appetite for domestic exploration, and to satisfy Australia’s ongoing (friendly) state rivalries, this year Wotif is again revealing each state’s finalists. For those wanting to take their time exploring or unable to travel interstate right now, we’re excited to recognise the top contenders from around Australia, proving that no matter where you are in Australia, there’s a local gem worthy of the support.”

As Aussies gear up for an epic summer, the awards are a reminder that often the best holiday memories are made by taking your time and enjoying the underrated travel experiences. Over four in 10 (42%) Aussies agree that doing so, allows you to get a better feel for the area, discover new things and connect with locals, while 40% of Aussies also say the laid-back, friendly nature of Australia makes travelling domestically a refreshing experience*.
