As the lights dimmed inside the iconic Sydney Opera House, anticipation filled the air. I was among the fortunate attendees at one of the opening performances of
Rent, the groundbreaking rock musical that has just begun its Sydney season. The energy was electric even before the first note sounded—a mix of excitement, nostalgia, and sheer curiosity to see how this celebrated production would come alive on one of the world’s most famous stages.
The Legacy of Rent
Rent has been a global phenomenon since its debut in 1996. Written by Jonathan Larson, it reimagines Puccini’s opera
La Bohème, transporting it from 19th-century Paris to 1990s New York City’s East Village. Larson’s vision was to capture the struggles, hopes, and heartbreaks of a generation grappling with love, art, poverty, and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Tragically, Larson passed away the night before the show’s Off-Broadway premiere, but his legacy lives on in every lyric and chord. The musical went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical, transforming the landscape of modern theatre.
A Story of Love, Loss, and Living in the Moment

The story of
Rent follows a group of young artists and friends trying to survive and create in New York City amid the shadow of AIDS. The central characters—filmmaker Mark, musician Roger, dancer Mimi, drag performer Angel, philosopher Collins, and performance artist Maureen—navigate hardship with resilience and hope. The themes of friendship, identity, and finding beauty in imperfection are timeless, and this Sydney production brings them vividly to life.
A Brilliant Sydney Cast Brings Rent to Life
The Sydney cast of Rent delivers a powerhouse performance. Kristin Paulse embodies the sensual vulnerability of Mimi with captivating presence, while Harry Targett gives Roger a raw, magnetic edge. Googoorewon Knox shines as the warm-hearted Collins, and Jesse Dutlow's portrayal of Angel is both joyous and deeply moving. The chemistry between the ensemble members fuels every scene, creating a sense of community that mirrors the very heart of
Rent.
Vocals, Music, and a Band That Rocks the House

One of the standout elements of this production is the live band, who infuse every number with high-voltage energy. From the defiant
“La Vie Bohème” to the tender
“Without You”, the music pulses with authenticity and emotion. The vocal performances are exceptional—each singer balancing rock intensity with heartfelt vulnerability. The harmonies soar, particularly in the unforgettable
“Seasons of Love”, which had the audience completely spellbound.
Dynamic Choreography and Direction
Director Shaun Rennie has crafted a production that feels both faithful to the original and refreshingly modern. The choreography by Luca Dinardo is energetic and expressive, seamlessly weaving contemporary movement with moments of emotional stillness. Every gesture feels purposeful, amplifying the sense of urgency that defines the characters’ lives. The fluid staging keeps the momentum alive, giving the production an unstoppable rhythm.
Set Design and Lighting that Capture Urban Grit

The set design evokes the industrial feel of New York’s East Village, with scaffolding, brick walls, and neon lighting creating a raw yet poetic atmosphere. The lighting shifts between moody blues, stark whites, and vibrant hues that mirror the emotional highs and lows of the story. At times, the deliberate use of darkness and shadow enhances the grit and realism of the characters’ world, drawing the audience deeper
into their struggles. The design team’s creative use of space and light makes even the smallest moments feel intimate against the grandeur of the Opera House stage.
An Emotional and Uplifting Experience
Watching
Rent at the Sydney Opera House is more than a night of theatre—it’s a celebration of life, creativity, and human connection.
