Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple - home to the oldest Buddha statue

Take a virtual 360º trip to Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple – built over 1,400 years ago, this revered site is home to the oldest Buddha statue that is so sacred even the priests are not allowed to look at it.

Nakamise, the main approach to the temple, is lined with souvenir shops selling delicious local snacks like oyaki (stuffed dumplings).

Enter the temple with the Sanmon Gate and check out the upper floor before heading into the main temple with its gilded splendor.

There is also a completely dark underground passage where a “key of paradise” is located and visitors who can find it within the darkness are believed to be granted salvation.
