Do you like to make deep and meaningful connections when you travel? A new website, Welcome To Country, was recently launched to help connect domestic and international travelers with a wide range of educational and cultural experiences around Australia, all created and run by the country’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Peoples.

While the nonprofit organization began in 2018 as a way to support and promote economic self-sufficiency and sustainability among Indigenous-owned businesses, the new website is designed to be a virtual marketplace that highlights Aboriginal art, dining, musical performances, storytelling and other cultural experiences visitors can have around Australia.

“We want to be able to show that we’re in control of managing our stories and we want to be able to share those stories,” said Aunty Margret Campbell, founder of Dreamtime Southern X, in a promotional video for the website. “We want to be able to create our own jobs and create our own economies.”

Choose from more than 100 cultural experiences or narrow them down by which state or territory you’ll be visiting. In Queensland, learn more about the world’s oldest rainforest, the Daintree, on a guided trip or visit the Great Barrier Reef with Dreamtime Dive and Snorkel for a unique look at the popular destination. Embark on a nature walk through native bushland in Victoria, visit centuries-old rock art in Murujuga National Park or hear about Western Australia’s history during a cultural walking tour in Perth. Tour gorgeous gorges in South Australia and the Northern Territory or splurge on a four-day guided walk through traditional lands in Tasmania. A number of virtual offerings are also available through the website, letting you learn more about the oldest living culture on earth from afar.
