The Shirahige Shrine in Japan

Pray to the god of longevity at Shirahige Shrine, which is famous for its giant vermillion-lacquered torii gate that stands like a sentry in the picturesque Lake Biwa.

Built about 2,000 years ago, the shrine is said to bring a variety of fortunes in business, marriage, and academic success.

There’s nothing quite like the spectacular scene of the torii gate at dusk as the sun sets over the lake – especially against the backdrop of fishing boats going about their business.

The gates are illuminated at night on weekends and New Year’s Eve.
