Today, Journey Beyond Rail Expedition launches Great Southern – Australia’s first premium rail
experience to span Australia’s south-east between Adelaide and Brisbane.
Great Southern is Australia’s first new great rail journey in ten years and will link Adelaide and
Brisbane providing guests the chance to explore the south-eastern corner of the country in a whole
new way.
Great Southern will operate limited departures over December 2019 and January 2020 and offer a
premium rail experience inclusive of all meals, beverages and unique Off Train Excursions.
Great Southern is the newest addition to the suite of internationally renowned Australian rail journeys
offered by Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions.
It joins The Ghan (Adelaide-Darwin) and Indian Pacific
(Sydney-Perth).
Through its progression across Australia’s south-east, Great Southern will showcase the picturesque
regional countryside, by both on and off train experiences.
The two-night, three-day northbound journey includes Off Train Excursions in the Grampians,
Australia’s capital city of Canberra, and the New South Wales north coast before arriving into
Brisbane.
The three-night, four-day southbound journey includes Off Train Excursions in the New South Wales
north coast, the expansive wine region of Hunter Valley and nearby Newcastle, as well as the iconic
Great Ocean Road and regional Victoria before arriving into Adelaide.
Chief Operating Officer for Journey Beyond (parent company of Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions),
Luke Walker said guests can expect the same level of service as the iconic Ghan and Indian Pacific
trains.
“As with all our trains, the real experience is the journey itself. Great Southern’s array of excursions
will allow guests to truly explore beyond the tracks and be immersed in the towns, cities and
landscapes the train passes through.
Our commitment to exceptional service and incredible shared experiences remains at the core of
what we do, and guests will indulge in regionally inspired and carefully curated menus and be looked
after by a team that goes above and beyond.”
Comprising of 28 carriages and two locomotives, Great Southern will accommodate up to 232 guests
across a range of Platinum and Gold Service cabins.
The Great Southern motif is an eastern grey kangaroo – the unique Australian marsupial typically
found in the areas the train will travel through.
It also hosts the colour of ‘Brilliant Orange’ – representative of the Australian summer months in which
it travels.
Fares start from $1779 per person for Gold Single accommodation, $1869 per person for Gold Twin
and $3999 per person for Platinum.
Last cabins are available for the inaugural season with bookings
also open for the 2020/21 summer.
