Odawara – a Port of Culture in Kanagawa and Wallabies' Base for the 2019 World Cup

Kanagawa Prefecture is located on the south coast of Tokyo. Its capital city, Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan by population. Kanagawa is also home to scenic destinations Odawara, Kamakura and Hakone.

Last year in October, the Australia national rugby union team travelled to Hakone where they enjoyed the natural beauty of Mount Fuji and relaxed in some of Japan's most renowned hot springs.

Furthermore, Odawara City – the major transit point for the Hakone hot springs area – has been selected as the base for the team's training camp site ahead of the Rugby World Cup in September.

Located only 40 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train, Odawara is a beautiful port city known for its fresh seafood and beautiful scenery. Its other gems include the historic 600-year-old Odawara Castle, Hokokuji Temple, the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and the pristine waters of Enoura – a popular spot for scuba diving.

Odawara has a long history and holds annual festivals and events that give travellers a genuine feel of its culture and traditions. One such tradition that Odawara is famous for is the production of Kamaboko, an authentic Japanese Fish Cake which was savoured by nobility and samurai as early as the 12th century.

Visitors can partake in Kamaboko making classes at the Suzuhiro Kamaboko Museum and do a walking tour of Kamaboko Street to try all of the different types of traditional fish cakes from over 30 small Kamaboko stores, as well as other fresh local produce.
