Heavy Rain in Sri Lanka

This is to keep you up to date on the current weather situation in Sri Lanka.

As you may have seen in the news, Sri Lanka has been experiencing unusual weather patterns in the last couple of weeks, with heavy rainfall resulting in minor flood situations in certain areas.

Rainfall exceeding 200mm was recorded in the Katunayake & Negombo areas (North West coast close to the airport) and the Baddegama area (West Coast). This was the first time in which rainfall exceeding 200mm was reported since 2016. However the Meteorology Department said rainfall of 200mm is no longer considered unusual, taking international patterns in to account. Landslide warnings have been issued in Kegalle, Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts, but no landslides have been reported as yet.

It is estimated that close 45,000 people been affected by floods in all affected areas overall, though the ill-effects of the heavy rains have been less than on previous occasions due to prior warnings issued to residents in vulnerable areas, and therefore more caution being exercised. A few exits of the Southern Expressway from Colombo to Galle (Kokmaduwa and Welipenna interchanges) have been flooded and motorists were advised to use alternate routes.

Other than some heavy rainfall, Tourism hotspots like Kandy , Tea Country , Yala and Galle areas have had no effects resulting in any disruptions to movement. (The flooded areas are manly interior of Galle.) The Eastern and Northern Provinces including the cultural triangle have not been affected by these adverse weather conditions.

On a positive note, from tomorrow onwards, Sri Lanka is forecasted to have good weather throughout the island.

If necessary, we will be sending another update on this situation soon, but it is unlikely since it is forecasted to be improving and ceasing. In case you would like to have more information on this, feel free to contact your Travel Consultants.
