From Donald Trump and masks, sequined gold blazers and clown costumes, through to fascinators, flannelette and budgie smugglers – last weekend’s Birdsville Races in Outback Queensland offered up some truly unforgettable trackside fashion moments.
Some punters opted for traditional country meet fashion style, while others took an “anything goes” approach – dishing up looks to shock, shake and shimmer.
A bucket list cultural event as much as a historic race meet, the Birdsville Races – now in its 137th year – attracted more than 8,000 travellers from all corners of Australia last Friday and Saturday for a jam-packed 13-race card, as well as unique outback entertainment and activities.
The carnival’s headline race – the Birdsville Cup – was taken out by apprentice jockey Clayton Gallagher on French Hussler, with the event featuring a record five female jockeys in competition across the two days of racing.
