Whales return to the Whitsundays

One very BIG reason to visit the Whitsundays in winter is to see whales, which migrate north every year along the Australian coast, to the safe, warm protected waters of the Whitsundays - the perfect place to bring their new calves into the world.

The whales’ annual migration north – and their antics while here - have become a sought-after spectacle for visitors and locals.

Seeing whales in the wild is one of the most moving and memorable things you can do and in the Whitsundays, we are lucky to record sightings almost every day in the season (June – August), somewhere in the marine park.

Every tour is a potential opportunity for tourists to the Whitsundays to meet these incredible creatures.

The Whitsunday waters are ideal for the majestic mammals, as the waters are protected, shallow and warm. This is the perfect setting for the birth of their calves and the waters make a fantastic nursery as the little ones wait for their blubber to grow before moving back down to the freezing Antarctic waters.

The whales might even breach for you – an amazing sight but one which even scientists don't really understand, being unsure whether it is to clean pests from their skin or simply for fun!

The waters of the Whitsundays are alive with a huge diversity of marine life all year round, with regular sightings of manta rays, dugongs, turtles and an amazing array of tropical fish.
