Key milestone in the design of the Wangetti Trail

Designers have completed a full walk-through of the proposed track for the Wangetti Trail as part of a major milestone announced by Member for Cook Cynthia Lui.

Ms Lui said Cairns-based trail design company World Trail had been tasked with inspecting the proposed track alignment.

“Already, they’ve identified an amazing array of vistas and sites of interest to attract new tourists to the region.

“This is a project that we expect will generate around $300 million over the next 30 years and will create 150 jobs once it’s operational.

“The Yirrganydji people and other Traditional Owner groups are being engaged and are providing advice on cultural matters to ensure that cultural heritage will be protected and celebrated.

“We’re also looking to ensure that the indigenous owners share in the ongoing economic benefits that will flow from the Trail’s operations.”

The milestone announced today comes after Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones revealed in May the Palaszczuk Government would fund the detailed design and business case for the Wangetti Trail - a 76-km nation-leading bike and walkway north of Cairns.

Ms Jones said the milestone was proof of the government’s commitment to making the most of ecotourism opportunities in Queensland.

“After decades of talking about ecotourism, we are the first government in history to invest real dollars in world-class ecotourism projects for Queensland,” she said.

“Ecotourism opportunities in and around national parks will play a significant role in diversifying our tourism product mix and improving our market share of the emerging ecotourism sector.

“I’m working closely with the Minister for Environment, the Minister for State Development, the Minister for Natural Resources and the Chair of Tourism and Events Queensland to bring to market a range of multi-purpose walking and bike-riding trails.

“It makes sense for us to invest in ecotourism to make the most of Queensland’s natural beauty.”
