The ISPS Handa New Zealand Open teed off in Queenstown today (9 March 2017), marking the first of three major golf events taking place in New Zealand in 2017.
Alongside this event, New Zealand is gearing up to host its first ever LPGA Tour event in September, the MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open, before the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship takes place in the capital city in October.
These major golf events help to cement New Zealand’s reputation as a world-class golf destination, providing the host courses with exposure the world-over.

The ISPS Handa New Zealand Open teed off in Queenstown today (9 March 2017), marking the first of three major golf events taking place in New Zealand in 2017.

For newly opened Windross Farm in Auckland, the MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open will provide a high profile introduction to the international golfing world as Lydia Ko tees off in her first LPGA Tour on home ground.
While the three international events will attract their share of international golfing fans over a brief few days, the golf courses provide a year-round attraction for visitors to New Zealand.
To showcase New Zealand’s golf offering to the world, Tourism New Zealand has released a series of promotional videos which hone in on each of the event host regions.
Each video captures the extent to which the country’s stunning landscapes shape its golf courses, with mountains, coastlines and valleys back-dropping many of the best. They also focus on the award-winning food and wine and thrilling adventure activities to be found in close proximity to each course and awaiting visitors when they step off the green.

ISPS Handa New Zealand Open
9 - 12 March, 2017Currently underway in Queenstown, the annual ISPS Handa New Zealand Open is a NZ$1 million Tier One event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, in partnership with the Japan Golf Tour. The event will be held at renowned courses Millbrook Resort and The Hills, with the former as the premier host. Nestled within the Southern Alps, Millbrook Resort offers 360-degree mountain views and 500 acres of lush green fairways, while the picturesque The Hills sits across a glacial valley and is back-dropped by snow-capped mountains.
Nearby: While in Queenstown, a trip to the 18 hole championship course Jack’s Point is a must. The course boasts a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of The Remarkables mountain range, making it one of the most visually spectacular courses in the world. Queenstown also offers a number of indulgent food and wine experiences and adventure activities, including Amisfield Vineyard & Bistro’s seasonal cuisine and wine tasting, four-wheel driving in the region’s backcountry with Nomad Safaris and jet-boating through the canyons of Queenstown’s famed Shotover River on the Shotover Jet.
MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open
28 September - 1 October, 2017Next up is the MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open which will see the LPGA Tour head to New Zealand for the first time ever. Held at the country’s newest course, Windross Farm Golf Course, the tournament will boast a purse of US$1.3 million and present an historic first opportunity for Rolex Rankings No.1 Lydia Ko to compete in an LPGA Tour event in her home city of Auckland. Windross Farm is an inland links-style course which offers a mix of flat and undulating ground, man-made lakes and dramatic, strategically placed bunkers, and was designed to make the most of the site’s natural environment to provide a golf experience like no other.
Nearby: A short 35-minute ferry ride from Auckland city and a haven of vineyards, olive groves and beaches, Waiheke Island is the ultimate island retreat. The island is home to Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant, which provides visitors with fine dining and world-class wines to match in one of the country’s most picturesque settings. For an escape from the city, Kauri Cliffs Golf Course is located in Northland’s Matauri Bay and is only 30 minutes from Auckland by helicopter. The course is ranked number 39 in the world in the Golf Digest Top 100 Greatest Golf Courses in the World list, with all bar three of the championship course’s 18 holes overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship

The top 120 amateur players from the Asia-Pacific region will descend on New Zealand in October to compete in the prestigious Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. One of only two ‘Royal’ courses in New Zealand, the Royal Wellington Golf Club will play host to the tournament. The parkland course is located just 35 minutes north of Wellington and features contoured fairways that are laced together by streams and lakes. The stakes are high for players in the tournament this year, with the winner earning a place at next year’s Masters and, for the first time, automatic entry to The Open Championship.
Nearby: Just 45 minutes from Wellington is Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, a traditional links course located on the undulating dune land of the Kapiti coast. The course has featured in seven different top 100 lists in the past 20 years and was the host for 12 previous New Zealand Open events. On Wellington’s waterfront you’ll find Whitebait restaurant, which serves up some of the region’s best seasonal local produce and seafood. While on the waterfront, learn about Wellington’s history and experience Māori culture on a Waka Tour with Te Wharewaka o Pōneke. Visitors on the tour learn ancient paddling techniques and hear historical stories about the harbour while travelling in a waka along the waterfront.
