For the first time in more than 20 years the Netball World Cup is back on Australian shores, with Sydney hosting the nine-day competition from today. Australia’s Diamonds will begin their quest for a third straight Cup with a blockbuster clash with Trinidad and Tobago at Allphones Arena.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres wished the Diamonds the best of luck, and encouraged sports fans to get involved and support this fantastic event.
“Australia last hosted the Netball World Cup in Sydney in 1991, so it is great to see it back on our shores. This event was secured for Sydney by the NSW Government, through Destination NSW, in partnership with Netball Australia,” Mr Ayres said.
“The event will provide a major boost to the local economy, with 4,000 domestic and international visitors expected to attend, delivering more than $6 million to NSW in visitor expenditure."
The Cup will feature teams from 16 nations, including England, New Zealand, Jamaica, South Africa and Scotland. With the tournament played every four years, the competition promises to be intense.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said the event forms an important part of the NSW Major Events Calendar for 2015.
“Securing the Netball World Cup furthers Sydney’s reputation as Australia’s capital city of major sporting events. It joins a packed calendar of events over the coming months, which includes the Bledisloe Cup, NRL Grand Final, V8 Supercars Sydney 500, Australian Open Golf and many more,” Ms Chipchase said.
The final will be played at Allphones Arena on Sunday 16 August.
