Delta Plans to Purchase 3.55 Percent Stake of China Eastern Airlines

In a major deal that will strengthen its foothold in travel to China, Delta Airlines has announced it will buy 3.55% of China Eastern Airlines, making it the first U.S. carrier to own part of a Chinese airline.

The move solidifies China’s place as a major market for both inbound and outbound travel from the U.S. While United Airlines is currently the leading U.S. airline in terms of service to China, Delta’s $450 million investment will open the door for further ventures between Delta and China Eastern.

Delta and China Eastern plan to invest in increased traveler services. The two airlines currently offer code-sharing on 80 routes (including on subsidiary Shanghai Airlines) and plan to continue this growth.
