Rimutaka Cycle Trail one of Lonely Planet’s hottest for 2015

The hugely popular global travel publishers Lonely Planet have just named the Rimutaka Cycle Trail as one of the world’s hottest new travel experiences for 2015.

The 115km trail runs alongside the Hutt River, across the Rimutaka Ranges, and through Wairarapa countryside to the Pacific coastline. In praise of the trail’s varied landscapes Lonely Planet said “Wellingtonians are wont to boast about their beautiful surrounds, from mountains to the sea. This new trail shows off some of the best of it.”

Positively Wellington Tourism Chief Executive David Perks says Lonely Planet recognition reinforces the region’s credentials as an active outdoor destination.

“Ever since Lonely Planet were the first to call Wellington ‘the world’s coolest little capital’ in 2011, they’ve understood what this part of New Zealand is all about. We have hundreds of kilometres of mountain biking trails in close proximity to our urban centres, with the Rimutaka Cycle Trail one of the most accessible and enjoyable for riders of all skill levels.”

Dave Woulfe, Director of Adventure Ventures says the success of the Rimutaka Cycle Trail has helped expand his business.

“We operate Days Bay Boatshed and the Bike Shed at Pencarrow. Since the Rimutaka Cycle Trail, we’ve been able to add mobile cycle hire and shuttle operations to our portfolio. Plus we’ve seen the trail act as a gateway to the region’s other rides, with visitors enjoying it so much they decide to explore further.”

The Rimutaka Cycle Trail was opened as part of the Nga Haerenga – The New Zealand Cycle Trail in October 2013 as one of the network’s Great Rides. The newest part of the experience is the coastal section from Ocean Beach to Orongorongo, which has recently been significantly upgraded, says David Hancock, General Manager of Destination Wairarapa:

“Significant shaping of the coastal track and modification of farm gates for easier cycle access has been undertaken. This coast section of the trail will always be more challenging for riders. As Lonely Planet says, it’s a ‘remote, rugged and wildly beautiful section of trail’ which rewards more skilled cyclists. It’s an experience we’re sure even more people will enjoy in 2015 thanks to Lonely Planet.”
