New Sydney App For Chinese Visitors

A new innovative smartphone app will be launched by Destination NSW for the growing Chinese tourist market. This app will give visitors a complete guide for their trip and planning information on where to go when in NSW.

The new Welcome to Sydney app will allow Chinese visitors to access all they need to know about visiting NSW in their own language.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Chipchase, said the smartphone app was part of a comprehensive strategy to capitalise on the flourishing China tourism market.

“Destination NSW will invest significantly in the coming year to exploit the extraordinary growth in visitor numbers from China, which is currently worth $1.2 billion to the State’s economy,” Ms Chipchase said.

“The Welcome to Sydney app is an important tool to combat the language barrier for Chinese visitors, making it easier for them to access current information about NSW and plan their trip here.

“We will work with key partners in both China and NSW to ensure this app gets the widest exposure possible to the Chinese traveller, both before they depart China and when they are in Sydney.

“This is the first stage of developing digital content for the Chinese traveller. Over time we will be supplement existing content specifically for people from China,” Ms Chipchase said.

The app will be available on both Android and iOS platforms, with the potential to rollout across other emerging platforms as they become significant in China. It will be available in August 2012.

The Running Of The Bulls At San Fermín Fiestas

running of the bulls
The running of the bulls is the main attraction in this famous celebration that turns Pamplona into one non-stop fiesta.

The city of Pamplona is world famous thanks to its San Fermín fiestas. Thousands of people come every year to experience the risk and excitement of the popular running of the bulls, immortalised by Ernest Hemingway in his novel Fiesta. For nine days, Pamplona residents and visitors alike, dressed typically in red and white, get carried away by the continuous festive spirit that invades the streets.

San Fermín starts 6 July at midday. At that moment the chupinazo is launched from the balcony of the town hall. It is a rocket that marks the official start of the fiesta, causing an outburst of joy amidst the crowd gathered in the square. The first running of the bulls is held the following day: at 8am sharp the doors of the Santo Domingo corral are opened, and hundreds of people run in front of the bulls on their route through the old town to the bullring.

This brief yet intense race is repeated every day 7-14 July. It covers 825 metres and lasts barely three minutes. The launching of rockets indicates the different parts of the race to participants: the first rocket signals the opening of the corral gates; the second means that all the bulls are out; the third, this one in the square, marks the entrance of the bulls into the ring; the fourth means they are in the bullpen and that the race is over. One of the most exciting moments happens a few minutes before the start of the running of the bulls, when runners entrust themselves to San Fermín, singing three times in front of a small statue on Cuesta de Santo Domingo Street.

Furthermore, every morning during the fiestas there is a parade of “giants and big-heads” through the centre of the city, for the little ones to enjoy. The festive programme also includes open-air celebrations, concerts, dance exhibitions and, of course, bullfights. They tend to be lively events, as organised groups of bullfighting fans pack the stands. San Fermín finishes 14th July at midnight, when the crowds make their way to the Town Hall Square and, with candles alight, sing “Pobre de mí”, to bid farewell to the fiesta until the following year.

Australia Gets Ready For More Tourists from China

Tourism Australia is now into the second year of its 10-year strategy to grow demand from China its fastest growing overseas market

Mr McEvoy, Tourism Australia Managing Director, said China's growing importance was at the heart of Tourism Australia's decision to unveil the latest phase of its There's nothing like Australia global marketing campaign in Shanghai earlier this month, and to increase marketing resourcing in China by 41 per cent in 2012/13.

"The increase in resources simply reflects the size and scale of the outbound travel opportunity presented by China. China is now our fastest growing and the most valuable overseas tourism market, delivering more than half a million-plus visitors and A$3.8 billion in spending in 2011," Mr McEvoy said.

Tourism Australia's China 2020 Strategic Plan is a core element in the Government's Tourism 2020 strategy, aimed at doubling overnight visitor expenditure to up to A$140 billion by 2020. Tourism Australia believes the China market has the potential to be worth up to A$9 billion alone, by the end of the decade.

Mr McEvoy believes its China ambitions will be significantly aided through the new Asia Marketing Fund, announced by the Australian Government in the recent 2012/13 Budget. This will deliver an additional A$61 million to Tourism Australia's budget over the next four years, helping to accelerate its development plans in China.

But Mr McEvoy explained that reaping the benefits of the 'Asian Century' requires more than just additional resources and good marketing campaigns.

"We know from our research that our global campaign resonates extremely well in China but, whilst this is great, it's only part of the equation. You can build all the demand you want through compelling ads, but if the actual experience fails to deliver on the promise, you end up doing more harm than good.

"The China 2020 Strategic Plan, which we unveiled in June 2011, identified a number of critical areas where work is needed to achieve China's tourism potential and win market share. And even though it's still very early days, I do feel we're making solid progress in some key areas," Mr McEvoy said.

Mr McEvoy added that being 'China ready' was critical if the industry is to fully leverage Australia's destination appeal amongst China's new urban elite.

"The fact that 542,000 Chinese travellers visited our country last year is fantastic, but certainly no reason to feel the job is done. If we're not fully prepared, the Asian Centurywill pass us by. The great news is that we're starting to see the industry really embrace this opportunity by adapting their business to meet the needs of Chinese visitors," he said.

He pointed to some recent examples:
- Accor - operator of hotel brands Sofitel, Grand Mercure, Mercure, Novotel, Ibis, Motel 6 in Australia - is developing a strategy to better cater for Chinese guests. Steps to make Chinese visitors feel more at home include: Chinese dishes on menus, Chinese newspapers, television channels, electrical adaptors and welcome kits in Mandarin. There is also special training for Accor staff in cultural differences, enabling them to better serve Chinese people.

- Jacob's Creek Visitor Centre in the Barossa Valley, South Australia - employing Mandarin speaking staff and providing Chinese cultural awareness training for all employees. Materials such as brochures, tasting notes and menus are also available in Simplified Chinese;

- Burswood Entertainment Complex, Perth, Western Australia - 90 per cent of Burswood's International Operations team speaks Mandarin and all staff is trained through 'China Ready' workshops. Burswood is also working with China Southern Airlines to boost awareness and China visits;

- Sovereign Hill, outdoor museum, Ballarat, Victoria - employing Mandarin speaking guides and providing guide maps and exhibits in Simplified and Traditional Chinese. They have also recently introduced a new "Gold Mountain Experience" tour , in response to feedback from Chinese visitors;

- Phillip Island Nature Parks, Victoria - Mandarin audio tours for all major attractions on Phillip Island - Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm and Nobbies Centre - on a recently developed iPhone app. Its Chinese website (www.penguinsparade.cn) enables Chinese visitors to share their experiences on popular Chinese social media site, Weibo;

- Merlin Entertainments Group (operators of Sydney Aquarium, WILD LIFE Sydney, Sydney Tower Eye, Madame Tussauds Sydney), New South Wales - products have been adapted for Chinese visitors, including multi-lingual brochures, attraction maps, signage and express lanes for local Chinese tour guides. Chinese wax figures have also been introduced at the recently opened Madame Tussauds Sydney, including Jackie Chan;

- Skyrail, Cairns, Queensland - cultural awareness training is provided for staff, with annual refreshers. Other simple measures include welcome signage and guides in Simplified Chinese.

Mr McEvoy highlighted research recently carried out by Tourism Australia across 13 of China's largest and fastest growing cities, and now being shared with industry, which has substantially improved understanding of its target consumer - their travel preferences and behaviour and the type of tourism experiences they were most looking for.

He also pointed to recent improvements in aviation access and capacity between Australia and China, including new direct flights and also deepening links into China's secondary cities. In many cases, Tourism Australia has actively influenced these outcomes, through aviation development funding and cooperative marketing activities.

Tourism Australia had recently restructured its Greater China operations to better focus on its Asian growth markets, bolstering the China team with more resources and appointing a new Regional Manager Greater China, Eva Huang.

Small Towns Now Have Tourism Websites

Victoria
As the world explodes with social media, and with websites changing the way we visually communicate, many smaller Australian towns are struggling to keep up or even get their message online.

In an Australian first, Tourism Channel have just completed a successful trial, by producing stunning websites  for six Victorian regional townships that vary in size (Mansfield/Mount Buller, Yea, Euroa, Yarck, Alexandra and Seymour). These websites have been built at no cost to the townships or the regional tourism body.

Alexandra
Tourism Channel have a further 50+ Victorian and NSW township websites planned, and are expanding from Gippsland to Port Headland in WA, bridging the gap between local town community tourism groups and potential visitors.

Many tourism regions struggle with budget cut backs, high website costs along with a lack of understanding, interest, competition and control. “We like to think of ourselves as the Robin Hood of tourism” says Nicholas Parkinson-Bates. “We want to give tools to the smaller towns in order to showcase shops, accommodation, local experiences and town benefits. Our free websites will be available to those towns that have never had the money, and may have been close to a more prominent town and struggled with their local identity. We want to support the tourism industry and get Australia noticed from the inside out. If a town or a member of the local tourism community is interested, they just need to email us and we will be in contact” says Nicholas.

Yarck
Jo says” Google’s search engines love well developed and content rich websites that are authentic in nature and provide an optimal experience for the visitor. Our visit sites will meet all of Google’s and other search engine algorithm requirements.”
Tourism Channel co-founders are :

Nicholas Parkinson-Bates, has worked with many prestigious and award winning hotels and resorts, in Australia and overseas, and, more recently, Regional Victoria Tourism Management.

Jo McInnes, a veteran of website development, search engine optimization processes, social media, on-line marketing, product marketing, regional tourism marketing, and the director of SheCommerce.

Euroa
Together with more than 12 dedicated staff, they want to ensure that Australian Tourism Products get the best Digital Marketing platforms available, including online accommodation bookings through TXA and that the websites are mutually beneficial.

Shanghai and Beijing Link Up

Shanghai

The two most well known cities in China, Shanghai and Beijing, have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration to jointly develop MICE tourism and target international events.

The partnership was launched by co-hosting this year’s China (Shanghai) International Meetings & Conferences Forum in April, Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development (BTD) and Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration (SMTA) also signed an MoU which outlined future cooperation with regards to jointly bidding for international MICE, sharing of resources like the Shanghai Meetings Ambassadors programme, and joint marketing and promotion efforts targeting overseas markets.

Beijing
The agreement will also extend to cooperation when either city plays host to international events, such as during next year’s ICCA annual conference in Shanghai, which will see pre- and post-event tours to Beijing.

“Beijing and Shanghai have always had some form of cooperation, but this is the first time that we are joining hands to promote China as a single MICE destination,” said SMTA vice chairman, Connie Cheng.

“Shanghai on its own is relatively small and what we can promote is limited, thus we need to engage bigger players to increase our competitiveness. Both cities have their unique advantages. Beijing is the political and cultural centre, while Shanghai is the financial centre. The collaboration will better enable both destinations to meet the needs of different events.”

Sun Weijia, deputy director general, BTD said: “Through the agreement, we will create synergy in promoting each city in overseas markets as well as the overall China brand.”

Sun Wenjia Beijing, Dao Shuming Shanghai
Noor Ahmad Hamid, regional director, Asia-Pacific, ICCA said: “People have always been talking about the rivalry between Beijing and Shanghai, but now that the two largest players in China are sitting at the same table, the cooperation is important and will better enable them to snare international events.”

Martin Sirk, CEO, ICCA said: “All of us are really excited to see this close collaboration between Shanghai and Beijing. Three to five years ago, the leaders in both cities did not even talk to one another.”

Film Festivals in Spain

San Sebastián Festival
Famous actors, glamour and, above all, good film. Every year there are a range of international film festivals held in Spain where you can enjoy the best new films before they go on general release. Some, like the San Sebastián Festival, are amongst Europe's most prestigious. You can really get involved in these events, which feature active audience participation. Do you like film? Then make a note of Spain in your diary.

The plan we suggest here includes discovering some of Spain's most beautiful towns and cities, coming across international stars in the street and enjoying some quality films. We are talking about Spain's film festivals, whose success and reputation are growing year by year. Some of them have become vital dates for film professionals and enthusiasts alike. Many of these events are also specialised, concentrating on a specific genre. For any film buff, they are a unique opportunity to spend several days immersed in your favourite passion.

Whether in the official selection our on the margin of the competition, these events usually present a selection of the best films from the world panorama. Spain's international film festivals give you the chance to see brand new films, to attend major screenings and to discover the works that have received awards at other festivals. Frequently, there are also seasons of classic films, themed programmes or retrospectives looking at renowned film makers; for the young ones, meanwhile, there are matinée and children's sessions. For fans and mythomaniacs, the best is to opt for presentation passes - these generally feature the attendance of stars and film teams.

Live the Seventh Art
The opening and closing galas are held at the main festival venue, while films are projected at different cinemas and locations around the host town. Ticket prices are quite affordable (3-6 Euro depending on the film). There are also passes available for the different programmed sections. These sometimes include the galas. Participation by the public is very important. This is why nearly all the festivals have a section where prizes are decided by votes from spectators.

The atmosphere of each of these events is another highly attractive aspect. The host towns and cities get fully involved and organise parallel activities such as exhibitions, workshops, seminars, concerts... Furthermore, you will find that they are very interesting tourist destinations, with everything from beaches and monuments to delicious gastronomy.

There are many international events that take place in Spain; nevertheless, there is one that stands out above all: the San Sebastián Film Festival. Legendary stars like Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen and Robert de Niro have walked its red carpet. It is one of Europe's most important film festivals, and the charming nature of its host city, San Sebastián, means that many actors and film makers stay on to enjoy it.

Other outstanding events are the Seminci Festival in Valladolid and the Sitges International Film Festival, which has been visited by directors such as John Woo and Quentin Tarantino, and boasts being the world's top fantasy film festival. Other events worthy of mention include the Huelva Latin American Film Festival, the Cinema Jove Young Film Makers' Festival in Valencia, the Peñíscola Comedy Film Festival, the Gijón Film Festival… These are just some of the many events you will find. There are specialised festivals focusing on shorts, documentaries, experimental film, cartoons… If you like film, then come to Spain and you are sure to have a great time!

World's Tallest Tower Opens in Tokyo

The world's tallest tower, at 634 meters height, has been opened near Asakusa, one of Tokyo's famous spots. After a 50 seconds ride of pure thrilling excitement inside Japan's fastest elevator, it takes visitors all the way up to the 350 meter Tokyo Sky Tree Observation Deck providing an incredible view of Tokyo. Apparently, even Mount Fuji is also visible on a clear day.

This spacious Observation Deck can hold up to two thousand people, and is outfitted with facilities like a restaurant and café area for visitors who want to spend time taking in the sights in a casual setting. The other popular feature for those who are not afraid of heights is the glass floor segment allowing public to really experience the thrill of being 350 meters in the air. One can also go up another hundred meters to the 450 meter tall Tokyo Sky Tree Observation Corridor. This Observation Corridor packs a big surprise transporting to a magical world above the clouds, it features a wide open view of the Pacific Ocean spreading out from the Boso Peninsula, approximately 75 kilometers out.

Tokyo Sky Tree Observation Deck
“With the opening of the world's tallest tower in Japan, interest in Tokyo Sky Tree has shot sky high. In fact, it is so popular that you can't even get inside without a reservation from the opening day on 22 May all the way up until 10 July 2012. The best way to get in for overseas visitors is to purchase a package tour inclusive of this latest attraction from a travel agent”, says Mr Motonari Adachi, Executive Director, Japan National Tourism Organization – Singapore Office.

The design of the Tokyo Sky Tree Tower is a blend of modern and traditional Japanese form, which skillfully employs the most advanced technological developments. The three leg structure of Tokyo Sky Tree in contrast to the four leg approach taken by the Eiffel Tower of Paris, takes up less space and is solid structurally like a camera tripod. This structure features a unique Japanese curve design called "sori and mukuri" (inward and outward curves), a characteristic seen in traditional Japanese architecture like temple and shrine architecture. The curve is reminiscent of a Japanese samurai sword curve, and it gives the tower a beautiful design with a strong structure and shape.

Tokyo Sky Tree
Living up to its name, Tokyo Sky Tree is like a giant tree growing up into the sky right in the middle of the city of Tokyo. It is a symbol of dreams and hope. And underneath this gigantic tree is a commercial district that has been dubbed "Tokyo Solamachi” (Tokyo Sky Town) as well as a complex that houses a planetarium offering an exciting trip amongst the stars and a sea-life aquariu
