Australia’s leading Indigenous performing arts company, Bangarra Dance Theatre, returns to the national stage with Sheltering, a moving and visually breathtaking production that explores connection, identity, resilience, and hope through three powerful contemporary works.
Touring nationally in 2026, Sheltering invites audiences into a deeply spiritual and emotional journey inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on Country, culture, and belonging. Presented across Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, this remarkable triple-bill production is set to become one of Australia’s most significant cultural events of the year.
For travellers seeking meaningful arts and cultural experiences during their Australian holiday, Sheltering offers an unforgettable opportunity to engage with the world’s oldest living cultures through dance, storytelling, music, and cinematic artistry.
Three Powerful Stories United by Country and Connection
Sheltering brings together three acclaimed works: Keeping Grounded, Brown Boys, and Sheoak. Each performance explores the enduring relationship between people, spirit, and land while honouring Bangarra’s rich artistic legacy and future vision.
Rooted in Indigenous knowledge and storytelling traditions, the concept of shelter becomes far more than physical protection. In this production, shelter represents cultural strength, ancestral wisdom, intergenerational connection, and the sacred sharing of stories across time.
Together, the three works create an emotionally layered theatrical experience that resonates long after the final curtain.

Originally developed through Dance Clan 2023 and reimagined for the national stage, the work examines the challenges of remaining culturally and spiritually grounded in an increasingly technological world.
Through striking choreography and emotional movement, audiences are invited to reflect on identity, belonging, and the importance of maintaining deep connections to Country in modern society.
Brown Boys Brings Indigenous Identity to the Screen
Brown Boys is a groundbreaking dance film directed by Daniel Mateo and Cass Mortimer Eipper. Deeply personal and visually poetic, the work explores the experiences of young Indigenous men navigating identity, belonging, masculinity, and cultural connection.
Inspired by Mateo’s own poetry and lived experience as a Gomeroi and Tongan man, Brown Boys combines cinematic storytelling with contemporary dance to create a moving portrait of resilience and self-discovery.
First presented during Dance Clan 2024, the work continues Bangarra’s tradition of pushing creative boundaries while amplifying authentic First Nations voices.

Originally premiering in 2015 as part of the acclaimed double bill Lore under the artistic direction of Stephen Page, the production draws inspiration from the sheoak tree, a powerful symbol of resilience, adaptability, and spiritual connection in Indigenous Australian culture.
Accompanied by the evocative music of renowned composer David Page, Sheoak delivers a profound meditation on survival, strength, and cultural continuity.
The emotional depth and visual beauty of the work continue to captivate audiences around the world.
A Cultural Journey Across Australia’s Great Cities
Sheltering will tour some of Australia’s most iconic performing arts venues throughout 2026, offering visitors the chance to combine world-class cultural experiences with unforgettable travel destinations.
