The newly inaugurated 21.8-kilometre bypass is designed to reduce congestion, improve travel efficiency, strengthen cross-border trade, and support tourism growth throughout the Greater Mekong region.

Officially opened on 23 April, the Nong Khai eastern bypass was constructed with an investment of THB 2.893 billion, equivalent to approximately USD 89 million.
The new road bypasses heavily populated residential areas in Nong Khai, helping reduce traffic congestion that has long affected both local residents and cross-border travellers.
The upgraded route creates a faster and more efficient connection between the provinces of Udon Thani, Nong Khai, and Bueng Kan, while also improving access to the Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge and border crossing points into Laos.
For visitors travelling through Northeast Thailand, the bypass is expected to significantly improve driving conditions and shorten travel times across the region.
