Opening night of The Pirates of Penzance at Sydney’s intimate Foundry Theatre proved immediately entertaining, gloriously chaotic and delightfully inventive.
Produced by Hayes Theatre Co in association with Foundry Theatre, this reduced-cast reimagining of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic packs five performers, boundless comic energy and remarkable theatrical ingenuity into one compact space.
From the opening moments, the production had the audience firmly in its grasp. The comedy landed instantly, the pace rarely slowed, and audience interaction transformed spectators into willing participants in the unfolding absurdity. Throughout the evening, the actors regularly engaged directly with audience members, blurring the line between performer and spectator and amplifying the sense of playful unpredictability.
I found The Pirates of Penzance immediately hilarious, clever and unexpectedly immersive. The intimacy of Foundry Theatre heightened the experience, making it feel less like watching a performance and more like joining a wonderfully orchestrated comic conspiracy.
Adding greatly to the evening’s appeal was the theatre’s thoughtfully designed seating configuration. Every seat provided excellent viewing of the stage. Some patrons relaxed on couches, chairs and tables positioned close to the performance area, while others occupied rows of tiered seating, ensuring comfort, intimacy and clear sightlines throughout the venue.
The audience responded enthusiastically. Laughter rolled through the theatre, surprises landed beautifully and the opening night atmosphere carried that rare electricity that only live theatre can create.

The story follows Frederic, mistakenly apprenticed to a band of well-meaning pirates until his twenty-first birthday. Ready to abandon piracy and pursue love with Mabel, daughter of the Major-General, he discovers that leap years and contractual technicalities have other ideas.
The result is a comic whirlwind of romance, duty, pirates, policemen and escalating nonsense.
Five Actors, Multiple Roles and Fearless Comic Commitment
One of the production’s great triumphs is its reduced-cast concept.
Five actors tackle multiple roles, shifting characters, accents and comic styles with astonishing dexterity. Rather than feeling limited by scale, the production thrives on invention.
Jay Laga’aia brings enormous comic authority, warmth and irresistible stage presence to the production. Possessing impeccable timing and an instinctive understanding of comic absurdity, he commands every scene he enters. Whether delivering rapid dialogue, leaning into audience interaction or navigating the production’s escalating theatrical lunacy, Laga’aia proves a formidable comic engine at the centre of the evening.Brittanie Shipway delivers powerhouse vocals that repeatedly lift the production to exhilarating heights. Combining vocal brilliance with fearless comic commitment, she brings wit, charisma and emotional vitality to every appearance. Her performance balances operatic strength with playful theatricality, creating moments of both musical excellence and comic sparkle.

Jonathon Holmes proves wonderfully adept at balancing character comedy, theatrical intelligence and razor-sharp delivery. His comic timing is superb, and his ability to pivot between roles contributes significantly to the production’s exhilarating pace and shape-shifting inventiveness.
Sarah Murr rounds out the quintet with tremendous versatility, musical assurance and dynamic comic presence. Equally comfortable delivering humour, character detail and ensemble precision, she helps anchor the production’s rapid-fire theatrical gymnastics while contributing enormously to its sense of joyful unpredictability.
Together, the five performers operate like a brilliantly disciplined comic machine.
Creative Brilliance and Clever Theatrical Design
The production’s success rests equally with an exceptional creative team.
Director and adaptor Richard Carroll, Co-Artistic Director of Hayes Theatre Co, delivers a bold, playful reinvention that honours Gilbert and Sullivan while embracing contemporary theatrical mischief.
Musical Supervisor, Co-Artistic Director of Hayes Theatre Co, Falconer keeps the celebrated score vibrant, nimble and dramatically integrated, while Assistant Director and Choreographer Shannon Burns ensures the rapid movement, role changes and comic physicality remain sharp and fluid.
The design team supports the production’s inventive spirit beautifully.
Nick Fry’s flexible set design maximises the intimacy of Foundry Theatre. Lily Mateljan’s costumes cleverly facilitate rapid transformations, while Jasmine Rizk’s lighting and Daniel Herten’s sound enhance mood, clarity and comic momentum. Tim Dashwood’s energetic fight direction adds further theatrical fun.
A Joyous Celebration of Live Theatre

The applause was warm, sustained and richly deserved.
This production succeeds not merely because it is funny — although it is very funny.
It succeeds because it understands the joyous communal experience that live theatre can create.
I arrived expecting an enjoyable evening.
I left thoroughly exhilarated.
What impressed me most was the production’s blend of comic intelligence, musical strength and unapologetic theatrical playfulness. The audience involvement amplified the unpredictability, the reduced-cast concept showcased extraordinary creative ingenuity, and the intimacy of Foundry Theatre magnified every joke, lyric and absurd revelation.
The communal spirit of the evening extended beyond the final curtain. The small Foundry Bar located in the Foundry Theatre foyer was open both before and after the performance, adding another welcoming layer to the theatre experience. It was particularly pleasing to see cast members mingling with theatre-goers at the Foundry Bar after the show, creating a warm, relaxed atmosphere that reinforced the production’s sense of accessibility, connection and shared celebration.
This was theatre that felt vibrantly alive.
