Global Meetings Powerhouse Delivers More Than AU$28 Billion in Economic Impact

IAPCO Shows the Strength of the Global Meetings Industry

The global business events sector has once again demonstrated its extraordinary economic power, with International Association of Professional Congress Organisers revealing that its accredited Professional Conference Organisers generated an impressive €17.36 billion in 2025. Based on today’s exchange rate, that equates to approximately AU$28.2 billion.

Released on Global Meetings Industry Day 2026, the latest annual member survey highlights the scale, resilience and future promise of the international meetings and conferences industry.

A Remarkable Year of Growth for Global Events

In 2025, IAPCO Accredited PCOs organised 23,512 meetings and events worldwide, marking a strong increase of more than 20 percent compared with the previous year.

Across 187 office locations around the globe, these highly specialised organisers managed more than 7.7 million participants, reinforcing the vital role that professionally managed conferences play in international business, research, education and public policy.

For travellers and destinations alike, this means far more than conference halls filled with delegates. It translates into hotel stays, restaurant bookings, transport demand, local tours and significant economic flow into host cities.

Why Meetings Matter for Travel Destinations

Business events have long been among the most powerful drivers of year-round tourism. Unlike seasonal leisure travel, international conferences generate visitor spending across accommodation, dining, entertainment and local experiences.

From Sydney to Cape Town, from Dublin to Florence, professionally organised meetings continue to create lasting benefits for destinations well beyond the closing session.

The 2025 IAPCO data confirms that meetings are not simply events. They are engines of economic development, knowledge exchange and long-term destination growth.

Smaller Events But Greater Agility

One of the most interesting findings from the report is the evolving shape of the meetings market.

While the total number of meetings rose sharply, the average number of participants per event fell from 408 to 328. At the same time, members delivered more events with leaner permanent teams.

This shift points to a more agile and adaptive industry. Smaller and more focused events are increasingly becoming the preferred format, allowing destinations to host specialised gatherings that are efficient, flexible and highly targeted.

For travellers, this can mean richer and more meaningful experiences, with delegates often spending more time engaging with host cities and local communities.

A Strong Future Pipeline for Global Destinations

Looking ahead, the future remains highly promising.

From 2027 to 2029, IAPCO members already have 6,841 confirmed and pending events in the pipeline. Importantly, many of these future meetings do not yet have a final destination attached.

This creates major opportunities for convention bureaux, tourism authorities, venues and city planners worldwide.

For destinations seeking to attract international delegates, now is the moment to engage early and shape the future of global business events.

Why This Matters for the Travel Industry

For travellers who love discovering destinations through business events, conferences are increasingly becoming gateways to authentic local experiences.

Delegates often extend stays before or after meetings, turning business trips into leisure escapes. This trend continues to benefit cities that offer strong cultural appeal, easy accessibility and memorable visitor experiences.

As the global meetings sector evolves, it remains one of the travel industry’s most influential forces—bringing people together, supporting local economies and opening doors to new global connections.

A Global Industry With Lasting Impact

The latest IAPCO figures offer a powerful reminder that professional conference organisers are helping shape the future of travel, commerce and international collaboration.

With more than AU$28 billion in economic impact, millions of participants and thousands of events still ahead, the business events sector remains one of the world’s most valuable travel drivers.

For destinations, the message is clear: the future of global meetings is bright, dynamic and filled with opportunity.
