10 TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME IN LISBON

1. Start Your Day with a Pastel de Nata

No trip to Lisbon is complete without indulging in a pastel de nata, the city’s iconic custard tart. Head to Pastéis de Belémfor the original recipe, or explore local bakeries throughout the city to find your favorite. Pair it with a strong Portuguese coffee, and you’ll have the perfect start to your day.

2. Get Lost in Alfama’s Winding Streets

Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest neighborhood, is a maze of narrow streets, steep staircases, and hidden courtyards. Wander aimlessly through its cobblestone alleys, and you’ll discover charming corners, colorful azulejos (tiles), and local taverns where you can hear the soulful sounds of Fado music.

3. Ride Tram 28 for a Scenic Tour

Tram 28 is not just a mode of transportation; it’s a quintessential Lisbon experience. This vintage yellow tram weaves its way through some of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods, including Graça, Alfama, and Baixa. Hop on for a scenic ride, but be prepared for crowds—try catching the tram early in the morning or late in the evening for a more relaxed journey.

4. Explore Lisbon’s Viewpoints (Miradouros)

Lisbon is famous for its breathtaking viewpoints, known as miradouros. Each offers a unique perspective of the city’s stunning landscape. Don’t miss Miradouro da Senhora do Monte for panoramic views, Miradouro de Santa Luzia for a picturesque setting, and Jardim do Torel for a peaceful retreat above the city.

5. Discover Lisbon’s Contemporary Art Scene

While Lisbon is steeped in history, it also boasts a thriving contemporary art scene. Visit the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology), explore the galleries in the LX Factory, and don’t miss the street art scattered throughout neighborhoods like Bairro Alto and Mouraria.

6. Take a Day Trip to Sintra

Just a short train ride from Lisbon, Sintra is a fairytale destination that shouldn’t be missed. Explore the enchanting Pena Palace, wander through the mystical gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, and take in the dramatic views from the Moorish Castle. It’s the perfect day trip to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

7. Savor Lisbon’s Seafood

Lisbon is a seafood lover’s paradise. From grilled sardines to octopus salad, the city’s culinary scene is rich with fresh flavors from the Atlantic. Visit Cervejaria Ramiro for some of the best seafood in town, or explore the markets like Mercado da Ribeira for a more local experience.

8. Enjoy a Sunset at the Belém Waterfront

Head to Belém, where you can explore historic sites like the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower before settling in for a sunset by the waterfront. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting golden light over the Tagus River, you’ll understand why this spot is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

9. Experience Lisbon’s Nightlife

Lisbon’s nightlife is as diverse as the city itself. Start your evening with a cocktail at a rooftop bar, then head to Bairro Alto for a lively night of bar hopping. For something unique, catch a Fado performance in Alfama or explore the underground music scene at venues like LuxFrágil.

10. Take Your Time and Embrace the Pace of Life

Lisbon is a city best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Take time to sit in a café, watch the world go by, and soak in the city’s laid-back atmosphere. Whether you’re exploring historic sites, enjoying a meal, or simply wandering the streets, remember to slow down and savor every moment.

TAT hosts ‘Unveiling Thailand’s Charm: A 2024 Showcase’ during New York Fashion Week

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in partnership with Thai fashion designer Pipatchara hosted ‘Unveiling Thailand’s Charm: A 2024 Showcase’ followed by ‘A Royal Gala Night’ to celebrate New York Fashion Week at the Mandarin Oriental.

Both events were graced by the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana. Warmly welcoming distinguished guests, members of the media, TAT’s partners, and friends of Thailand attending both events were a TAT delegation led by Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor.

Ms. Thapanee said “Here in New York, we are showcasing the five essential experiences in Thailand, each representing a facet of the kingdom’s unique charms, from food, fashions, and arts and crafts to culture and scenery. Through these special showcases, we’re inviting travellers to discover our beautiful country, experience our culture in new ways, and witness how we’re shaping the future of tourism.”

The ‘Unveiling Thailand’s Charm: A 2024 Showcase’ placed emphasis on immersive experiences of the ‘5-Must Do’ pillars; these being: Must Taste, Must Try, Must Buy, Must Seek, and Must See.

Starting with Must Taste, attendees were taken on a culinary journey by experiencing the flavours of Thailand with organic chocolates imported from the destination. Traditional Thai dances through contemporary exercise were performed throughout for a Must Try element. Overall, indicative of Must Buy, the showcase presented Thailand’s advancement in the fashion industry and how fashion can help conserve local resources and community participation through the globally recognised Thai brand Pipatchara.

Virtual reality videos were a Must Seek moment, presenting immersive content of hidden gem sights and experiences from the destination. Thai artist Subannakit Kraikum’s traditional Thai paintings were displayed throughout the space depicting Thai culture and festivities as a Must See.

The showcase was followed by ‘A Royal Gala Night’ to showcase Thailand’s fashion and sustainable tourism as part of TAT’s vision to drive Thailand tourism toward high-value and sustainability.

The Royal Gala featured a fashion show curated by Pipatchara Kaeojinda, the co-founder of Pipatchara. Sustainability is at the core of Pipatchara’s philosophy. The Thai designer shared pieces from her new collections, all representing their mission to craft sustainable fashion, that supports local Thai communities.

Ms. Pipatchara said “A key element to creating our art is the Thai local community being a focal part of our process. The collection you see here today is our craft created with and by local artisans and members of our community. Today, we are proud to connect the fashion community with our Thai community.”

The fashion show told a story of transformation, turning waste into something purposeful and elegant in partnership with local artisans and members of local Thai communities.

“The partnership with Pipatchara underscores TAT’s commitment to sustainable tourism that benefits visitors, communities, and the environment. Our initiatives include the STAR system and Thailand Tourism Awards to assess and recognise eco-friendly practices in the industry. Here in the US, our partnership with Tourism Cares aims to positively impact local communities,” Ms. Thapanee concluded.

The US is one of Thailand’s important markets, having recorded over 930,000 US travellers in 2023. Year-to-date statistics, during 1 January – 21 August, showed 632,378 US travellers visited Thailand.

TAT has set a target to attract 1.13 million US travellers in 2024. Key strategies being implemented in the US market include the ‘Come Re-Discovery Your Thailand’ project in partnership with Virtuoso, Thailand Meaningful Map with Tourism Cares, and various other marketing and publicity activities, including the partnership HBO for the filming and promotion of The White Lotus season 3 in Thailand.

Mushroom-themed tours emerge as popular summer-vacation option

southwest China's Yunnan Province. (Xinhua/Wang Jingyi)
Around 7:30 a.m., Su Mingxue, a fresh-faced tour guide, assembles a group of adventurers for a unique one-day expedition. Their destination is not a typical tourist hotspot but a tranquil hill on the outskirts of Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Su and her group assume the roles of "mushroom hunters," reveling in the delight of foraging for wild fungi. This type of one-day foraging tour has become a burgeoning trend in Yunnan's summer tourism sector this year. Many visitors make a special journey to Yunnan to partake in these tours, as the province's abundant rainfall and moderate temperatures usher in a prime season for wild fungi each summer.

Known as China's "kingdom of plants," Yunnan boasts unparalleled biodiversity due to its unique natural conditions. It is home to approximately 900 varieties of edible wild mushrooms, representing over 90 percent of the country's total. These fungi are cherished seasonal delicacies for the locals across Yunnan.

Since last year, Yunnan's wild mushrooms have gone viral on social media, both in China and internationally. Enthusiastic foodies and netizens endearingly refer to them as "magic mushrooms," recognizing their exquisite taste but also cautioning that improper cooking can lead to hallucinations.

Su and her husband have been operating a wild-mushroom business in Kunming for several years. During the season, their business flourishes as wild fungi emerge from the earth.

Earlier this year, numerous customers expressed a desire to personally experience wild-mushroom foraging rather than merely purchasing them. Su arranged a tour for them, sharing pictures and videos on social media platforms, and these unexpectedly drew the attention of many netizens. The success of this first venture inspired her to develop the "fungi-picking tour" as an addition to her business offerings.

After a scenic hour-long drive, Su led her group of nine to a village on the periphery of Kunming, where villager Li Xue was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the mushroom-picking group. The area around the village features several hills, considered ideal for mushroom foraging.

"On sunny days after a period of heavy rain, a variety of fungi flourish in the hills," Li explained, distributing raincoats and gloves to the group and sharing tips on foraging in the forest, including information on the growth of wild fungi, hiking skills, techniques for discovering wild fungi and methods for signaling by shouting.A man picks up wild fungi during a "fungi-picking tour" in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province, Aug. 4, 2024. (Xinhua/Wang Jingyi)

The mushroom-themed tours are typically led by an organizer and a seasoned local to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience. They often last for half a day or a full day, and offer participants a range of activities such as foraging for fungi, taking photographs and indulging in a fungi feast.

These exciting and novel tours have become increasingly popular among younger demographics. Guo Shuqi, hailing from north China's Shanxi Province, made her second trip to Yunnan this year specifically for mushroom foraging.

Guo describes the experience as "an adventure into nature," noting that "the immersive experience combines hiking with enjoyment." During her day trip, Guo collected various wild fungi, including one called "lurid bolete," which gave her a profound sense of achievement.

Su said that the tour fees, often determined by the number of participants and the location, range from 100 yuan (about 14 U.S. dollars) to 300 yuan per tourist. In July alone, she hosted over 800 tourists, generating an income of around 200,000 yuan.

"Safety is paramount," Su said, adding that she has chosen several villages where she has been purchasing wild fungi for years to ensure familiarity with the local weather and terrain. In addition to providing outdoor-activity equipment and pre-trip training, she also secures insurance for all participants.

Su also allocates a portion of her income to the local villagers to mitigate any impact on their fungi industry.

In Wang Kaiyu's hometown of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, one of Yunnan's key wild-fungi producing areas, these tours are seen as a golden opportunity.

Wang, 25, recently returned to his hometown after graduation and began posting videos about the cultivation and processing of wild fungi on social media, leveraging his expertise in filming and editing to create engaging science videos and enticing more fungi enthusiasts to visit his hometown.

"The fungi season lasts from June to September, offering new opportunities for summer tourism," Wang said, noting that the mushroom-themed tours not only help enrich local tourism activities but also contribute to the growth of the local hotel and catering industries.

"I really look forward to guiding more tourists in experiencing the joy of mushroom picking in the coming months," Wang said, adding that Yunnan residents cherish these wild fungi as gifts from nature and reflections of a healthy ecology. As such, he is also committed to promoting ecological protection for sustainable development alongside his tourists.

This announcement reflects the NSW Government’s commitment to celebrate the achievements of female athletes.

The announcement follows the recent completion of a $3.1 million upgrade to Penrith Whitewater Stadium to enable it to stage the World Championships which included upgrades to the whitewater course and venue infrastructure, including new course gates and obstacles, a new timing system, refurbishment of pumps, stadium pathways improvements and canoe conveyor system upgrades.

“This is a world class event that will help inspire our next generation of canoe and kayak stars while adding to our investment in two Rugby World Cups, Netball World Cup and Women’s Asian Cup.

“The Fox family are incredible ambassadors not just for their sport but for sport full stop and deserve the Fox Island honour for all they have contributed to Australia.”

Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said: “NSW is rightly proud of our Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship legacy, and we couldn’t be more excited to help host the 2025 International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Championships in the heart of Western Sydney.

“A large part of Australia’s most successful Olympics performance in history came down to two girls from Penrith, Jess and Noemie Fox who honed their skills through countless hours on the rapids here at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

“To recognise the significant contribution of the Fox family to Australian sport – from Jess and Noemie to their parents Richard and Myriam, we are very proud to also be naming the island at Penrith Whitewater Stadium, Fox Island.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said: “Penrith has a rich history of developing sporting talent that excels on the world stage, including World and Olympic Champion Jess Fox and inaugural Kayak Cross Gold Medallist Noemie Fox.

“We are proud of our world-class sporting venues which have hosted some of the biggest sporting events in the world, including the Penrith Whitewater Stadium and Sydney International Regatta Centre.

"The Fox family has made a tremendous impact to the local and paddling communities, and it is only fitting to have Penrith Whitewater Stadium become home to Fox Island.

“I am sure Sydney sports lovers will ensure the 2025 Canoe Slalom World Championships at Penrith Whitewater Stadium next October are the best World Championships ever.

“There is no doubt that the Fox family are the first family of paddling in Australia. The contributions that each of them has made have lifted the sport to new heights. I look forward to joining Richard and Myriam watch the girls fly down the rapids of Fox Island in October.”

CEO Paddle Australia Phil Jones said: “Thank you to the NSW Government for their continued support of canoe slalom in Australia and this significant contribution to help us deliver the 2025 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships at Penrith Whitewater Stadium.

“The Penrith Whitewater Stadium is a proud legacy venue of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and we are pleased to once again be delivering a world class event at this facility as we aim to inspire a new generation of participants and fans.

“Sydney is renowned for delivering incredible major events and we look forward to welcoming athletes and fans from around the world to Western Sydney for another marquee event.

“We want to build on the great success our athletes, in particular Jess and Noemie Fox, delivered for Australia at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. By hosting the World Championships in 2025 we can connect with even more fans and hopefully unearth future Olympic champions,” he said.

Three-time Olympic Gold Medallist and IOC Athlete Commission, IOC Board Member Jess Fox said: Following Australia’s most successful Olympic Games ever in Paris, we are excited to welcome the world’s best slalom paddlers to Penrith Whitewater Stadium in 2025.

“We have seen at recent World Championships and Olympic Games, how much fans enjoy our sport with packed crowds creating a wonderful atmosphere. We know Penrith is primed to provide fans of our sport and Western Sydney locals with that same incredible atmosphere.

“I remember being a six-year-old in the stands for Sydney 2000 and an 11 year old in the stands when the World Championships were here in 2005, so to have that legacy 20, 25 years on, for me it means so much.”

ICF President Mr. Thomas Konietzko said: “The NSW Government’s significant contribution for the 2025 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Penrith will help towards delivering a successful event.

“Penrith has played a crucial role in producing the world’s best Canoe Slalom athlete Jessica Fox. After the resounding success of Paris 2024 which saw her sister Noemie win gold during the kayak cross debut at the Olympic Games, the World Championships at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium will be the perfect setting to inspire future generations, add to the legacy of Sydney 2000 and engage fans on the green and gold runway towards 2032 Olympic Games in Australia.”

Reap province recently. - Photo: Yousos Apdoulrashim
Prime Minister Hun Manet has approved changes to the visiting hours of temples in Siem Reap province, particularly for watching sunrises and sunsets at the Angkor Wat, Phnom Bakheng, Pre Rup and Phnom Krom temples.

At present, visitors are not allowed to enter Angkor Wat from 5.30pm onwards, but those who enter before this time can stay until 6.30pm.

Meanwhile, the Pre Rup, Phnom Bakheng, and Phnom Krom temples, which are also popular places to watch the sun rise and set, are currently open from 7am to 7pm.

For other temples in the Angkor area, visiting hours are from 7am to 5.30pm. These hours will also be adjusted.

In a special message to the public on Thursday (Aug 22) evening, the Prime Minister announced: “After discussions with experts and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, I have approved the adjustment of the entry hours for Angkor Wat from 5am to 5.30pm, to 5am to 6pm”.

“At Pre Rup, Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Krom, we will adjust the hours from 7am to 7pm, to 6am to 7pm. Other temples which are currently open from 7am to 5.30pm will now be open to the public from 6am to 6.30pm,” added Manet.

He noted, however, that these hours may vary depending on the season, as in some months, sunrise and sunset occur earlier or later.

Additionally, the prime minister mentioned that plans are being considered for improving the ticket purchase process for international visitors to the Angkor Archaeological Park.

Currently, visitors have their photos taken to create a unique identification card which grants access to the temples.

According to Manet, new options under consideration include using wristbands or QR codes on mobile phones that can be scanned when entering temples.

He explained that the proposed adjustments to the ticketing process aim to avoid disrupting the experience of tourists, as at present, officials must check their cards while entering or visiting the temples. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

The Former Sydney General Post Office Celebrates 150th Birthday

Sunday, 1 September 2024, marked the 150th birthday of the heritage-listed General Post Office (GPO) building at No.1 Martin Place.

This historic building was the communications hub, linking Sydney to the rest of Australia and the world. The Fullerton Hotel Sydney is deeply honoured as the custodians of the building to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Constructed in two stages, beginning in 1866 and designed under the guidance of architect James Barnet, the GPO was regarded as a defining symbol of Sydney, comparable to the significance of the Houses of Parliament in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The first stage of the GPO was completed and inaugurated on the 1st September 1874, celebrated as Sydney's first major architectural landmark.

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney's Director of Sales and Marketing, Darryl Healey, expressed the importance of celebrating the occasion.

“Here at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney, our team cares deeply about our responsibility to the GPO building and what it represents to the people of Sydney,” Mr Healey said.

“As one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the GPO building was home to Sydney's telegraph operating room for over 70 years and hosted the city's first public telephone exchange in 1882.”

“Intricate sculptures and marble statues of Queen Victoria adorn the exterior, representing an important time in Sydney's past.”

“Its importance to the foundation and growth of Sydney is immeasurable, and we're fortunate to enjoy its beauty daily. Guests and visitors can appreciate its architectural wonders and delve into its rich history through guided tours with us.”

“We are honoured to be celebrating this remarkable occasion with the community throughout the year, beginning with gifting one lucky winner a stay in our Heritage Long Suite through a giveaway promotion in the month of September.”

The Fullerton Hotel Sydney will be holding giveaways through its social media channels. Follow @fullertonhotelsydney & @GPOSydney on Instagram for your chance to win experiences at the GPO, including a night in The Fullerton Hotel Sydney's Heritage Long Suite.

The tiny WA town named as top national tourist destination

Exmouth
The tiny WA town of Exmouth is celebrating being named as National Top Tourism Town with less than 5,000 residents by an Australian Tourism Council industry panel of judges and public vote.

The Australian Top Tourism Town Awards are presented by the Australian Tourism Industry Council and supported by Tourism Australia. Finalists in each category have won at a state level through a process involving industry panel judges and a public vote.

This recognition reflects the region’s unique natural beauty, diverse experiences, and tireless commitment of the community to providing world-class hospitality. It underscores the exceptional work and dedication of the local tourism industry, community, and stakeholders to create a welcoming and memorable environment for visitors.

The Shire of Exmouth expressed its gratitude to all those involved in making this achievement possible. While the award is a tremendous honour, the shire president said it also highlights the growing need for sustainable tourism practices that align with infrastructure development in the region.

“We’re grateful to represent and showcase Exmouth as the unique wonderland it is,” Exmouth Shire president Matthew Niikkula said.

“And we’re looking forward to the future ahead, knowing that we have the unwavering support from Tourism WA and the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation to present Exmouth as a premium tourism destination to the world while listening to our community’s needs.

“As we clearly experienced over the last couple of years unplanned travel can strain resources and impact the visitor experience and our community’s wellbeing. To ensure that Exmouth continues to thrive as a premier tourism destination, it is crucial that we work together to implement sustainable initiatives and enhance our infrastructure. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and enjoyable tourism experience for everyone.”

Bendigo and Daylesford recognised in Australia’s Top Tourism Town Award

Bendigo
Two outstanding Victorian tourism towns have been named among the nation’s best destinations in Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards, announced today at Parliament House in Canberra.

Bendigo and Daylesford both took the silver prize in the Top Tourism Town (population of over 5,000) and Top Small Tourism Town (population under 5,000 but over 1,500) categories respectively.

Victoria Tourism Industry Council CEO Felicia Mariani said these awards confirmed that Victoria is home to some of the best tourism towns and experiences in all of Australia.

“The Australian Top Tourism Town Awards have grown to become a hotly contested and much-loved competition as destinations vie for the coveted right to be acknowledged as the best tourism towns in our vast country,” she said.

“We are so proud and thrilled that Bendigo and Daylesford have taken home silver medals in this competitive landscape, proudly positioning our great state on the national stage.”

Australia's Top Tourism Town Awards are presented by the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) and are sponsored by Tourism Australia and Qantas.

Winners are determined by first winning gold in their respective states, where a state judging panel, combined with a ‘people’s choice’ public voting process decides which towns progress to the national judging panel.

Devonport in Tasmania won the major national award of Top Tourism Town, with Exmouth in Western Australia taking out the gold for Top Small Tourism Town, followed by Huskisson in New South Wales winning the Top Tiny Tourism Town category.

“We absolutely love this event each year as we get the chance to celebrate the unique and compelling offerings of our regional towns and centres around Australia,” Ms Mariani said.

“Bendigo and Daylesford are leading destinations in Victoria that represent some of the very best tourism experiences for our visitors.

In winning silver this year, both of these regional destinations embody the creative, cultural and culinary credentials that Victoria is renowned for across the country and around the world.”
