Triple treat for newly launched Darwin Airport Resort with trio of accolades at Hospitality NT Awards

Darwin Airport Resor
Darwin Airport Resort was only launched in December 2023, but it is already winning acclaim in the accommodation industry, having won a trio of titles in the Hospitality NT Awards for Excellence 2024.

The Resort, which was launched following a $30 million upgrade and integration of the adjacent Novotel and Mercure hotels, won awards for:
  • Best Superior Accommodation
  • Best Redeveloped Accommodation Hotel
  • Best Overall Accommodation Hotel
The hotels are owned by Airport Development Group (ADG), which also owns Darwin Airport. ADG’s visionary $30 million investment in the project has produced a remarkable transformation of the hotels involving the progressive refurbishment of existing rooms and the creation of new pool villas, suites, and bungalows, perfectly capturing Darwin’s tropical environment.

Central to the integration of the hotels is a stunning new reception and lounge area, which overlooks a new 61-metre, one million-litre swimming pool, one of the largest hotel pools in Australia. Complementing the vast pool are poolside cabanas, a children’s aquatic playground, new poolside dining, and extensive planting of trees and tropical greenery.

A feature of the resort is the diversity of rooms available to guests in its 423-room inventory. The refurbished Novotel and Mercure hotel rooms boast sleek new interior designs, while guests can also choose family suites, freestanding bungalows, and new 5-star tropical pool villas with their own plunge pools.

Capturing their connection to Larrakia country, each villa is named after a leading Territorian, with their story outlined for guests to read.

Guests are immediately immersed in Darwin’s tropical environment with the striking Indigenous mural painting that covers the 41-metre water tower in front of the hotels. Nicknamed the ‘Darwin Didgeridoo,’ the massive art piece gives visitors a memorable first connection to Darwin’s Larrakia people and tells their story. Two other striking Indigenous murals were commissioned as part of the redevelopment.

ADG has also established an Indigenous Training Academy to develop and mentor Aboriginal employees for the hotel, airport and the wider Northern Territory tourism and hospitality sector.

The project included upgrades to the hotels’ food and beverage offerings. Guests can now enjoy all-day dining and refreshments at the new Splash Café and the laid-back Cossie’s Poolside Bar & Bistro.

Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort General Manager Chris Chaffe said recognition in the Hospitality NT Awards for Excellence was a powerful endorsement of the visionary project’s impact on the Northern Territory tourism and hospitality sector.

“The project was a first for Australia, it was bold and exciting, and the results have been outstanding,” said Mr Chaffe.

“There are more elements to come in the property's evolution, but it was wonderful for the team to be able to celebrate these awards so soon after the relaunch.

“The extensive renovations have enhanced the resort's aesthetic appeal and significantly improved the guest experience. With lush tropical gardens, contemporary interiors, and upgraded amenities, the resort now offers a sanctuary that harmoniously blends comfort with Darwin’s tropical environment.

Darwin Airport Resort
“The hotels provide a warm and authentic introduction to the Top End, and the integration of Indigenous art, culture and employees into the project gives a real taste of the Larrakia nation.

“I am very proud of the team and am confident that the success of the hotels will provide a very welcome boost to Northern Territory’s tourism sector, which is still to recover fully to 2019 visitor levels.”

Novotel & Mercure Darwin Airport Resort is managed by Accor, Australia’s largest hotel group.

Vietnam promotes smart tourism ecosystem to attract visitors

Localities in Vietnam have been taking actions to develop smart tourism ecosystem to attract visitors in the digital era.

In Hanoi, tourist attractions like the Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Centre, the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, the National Museum of History, and the Hoa Lo prison historical relic site have organised many online exhibitions, and put in place e-ticket systems.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the 3D technology has been optimised to provide information and promote tourism, notably the smart interactive tourism map with virtual travel assistants at destinations.

Other localities such as Quang Ninh, Da Nang, and Ninh Binh have also stepped up the use of artificial intelligence (AI), 360-degree virtual reality technology (VR 360), and QR payment.

Many major seminars and discussions on smart tourism have been organised to raise the awareness of relevant agencies, departments, and sectors of smart tourism, and seek solutions to boost the segment.

Despite positive changes, experts, however, have expressed their concern over obstacles to smart tourism as most of the Vietnamese travel firms are small- and medium-sized, unable to invest much in technology due to their limited capital.

Online travel companies with international brands are dominating the domestic market. Meanwhile, only about 10 Vietnamese businesses are offering online services. Apart from the fierce competition, domestic firms are facing a host of difficulties like inharmonious information technology infrastructure, and the lack of experience and personnel.

Under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's project "Application of Industry 4.0’s technology to develop smart tourism, spreading tourism to become a key economic sector", Vietnam is striving to complete the smart tourism ecosystem to meet the increasing demand of the market.

The project is set to address shortcomings and create momentum for the country’s tourism to speed up and contribute to national modernisation.

Exploring Colombo's History and Culture

ITC Ratnadipa Hotel
Recently I was travelled to Sri Lanka as Guest Media invited to participate in the Southern MICE Expo 2024. The first activity for the 160 invited  people from 16 countries was to enjoy a morning city tour of Colombo. Unfortunately, as I had arrived several days previously, I was not able to participate in this bus tour.

However, I enjoyed my own self-guided own tours of central Colombo over 2 days and two nights by foot and tuk-tuk. I enjoyed my walks each day along the city streets and footpaths, being amazed at the mix of history and striking modern new buildings. On the ocean edge of the city there was a delightful mix of old government buildings and hotels (such as the Galle Face Hotel), and the impressive new hotels (such as the ITC Ratnadipa Hotel) and shopping malls.

Pettah Markets
On both days I enjoyed walking around the Pettah neighborhood of Colombo. I explored its famous Pettah Market, a series of open-air bazaars and markets. There was a huge number of wholesale and retail shops, buildings, commercial institutions and other organisations located there. I was restricted to what I could buy to take back home, as I had only my small carry on bag to carry on the plane and no checked in bag. I looked at, but did not purchase any of the well priced clothes (traditional Sri Lankan and western style), shoes, bags, handicrafts, and electronic gear. I knew they would weigh my bag, but not me. So my purchases were restricted to what I could put in my mouth. So I enjoyed eating local food, drinks, and yes, icecream.

St. Philip Neri's Church
The main market segment is designed like a gigantic crossword puzzle. One can traverse through the entire market from dawn till dusk. Pettah is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic area, and I enjoyed visiting some of its many landmarks, including some very small and some large Churches, Temples and Mosques. I was able to join in a Sunday morning worship service at the St. Philip Neri's Church, near the historic Fort Railway Station. I went on a 2 hour tuk tuk tuk tour and was shown many interesting buildings. It was a bit rushed, so I did not learn much about the places I was taken to.

Red Temple
During my first full day in Colombo I was fortunate to visit the The Red Temple, also known as the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. It is one of the oldest mosques in Colombo and is a historic and iconic landmark in the heart of this thriving city. This stunning mosque, famous for its red bricks and ornate architecture, has been a central place of worship for the Muslim community in Colombo for over a century and is renowned for its striking architecture and rich history.

Red Temple
Built in 1909, the Red Temple was designed by architect H.L. Saibo Lebbe, who drew inspiration from Islamic and Gothic styles.  The Red Temple has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Colombo's Muslim community. It has served as a place of worship, education, and community gatherings for generations.

The Red Temple features a unique and striking design based on the pomegranate motif, which is a prominent element of its architecture. The pomegranate design is:
  • Depicted in intricate brickwork and ornate carvings
  • Used to adorn the mosque's walls, arches, and ceilings
  • Symbolic of fertility, prosperity, and spiritual growth in Islamic tradition
  • Believed to represent the fruit of paradise
  • A testament to the mosque's rich cultural and artistic heritage

Red Temple
The pomegranate design, combined with the mosque's red bricks and Gothic arches, creates a striking visual effect, making the Red Temple a standout architectural landmark in Colombo. The design has also inspired local artisans and craftsmen, influencing the development of Sri Lankan art and architecture.

The mosque's impressive architecture and serene atmosphere make it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, offering a peaceful respite from the city's hustle and bustle.

Red Temple
I enjoyed being in a small group of people taken on a tour of the inside of the temple. It was a simple matter of removing shoes and wearing a cloak over my clothes. It was interesting hearring about its history and uses today. After a look around the ground floor, we walked up the many stairs to the roof level to see the views over colombo. (No, I didn't count the eteps). The Temple was expanded in recent years so that 10,000 worshipers could gather together rather than the 1,000 that could be fitted in before.

The Red Temple in Colombo is a remarkable landmark that embodies the rich cultural heritage and religious diversity of Sri Lanka. Its stunning architecture, historical significance, and community outreach make it a treasured asset to the city of Colombo and a symbol of the country's commitment to religious harmony and cultural exchange.

Vesak Lanterns
On my first night in Colombo I walked to the Galle Face Green, which is a popular ocean-side urban park. I enjoyed the stunning sunset and scenic views of the ocean. Usually a relaxing stroll, tonight I was in the company of thousands of people celebrating the Vesak Festival. The Vesak Festival in Sri Lanka is a Buddhist festival that commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Gautama Buddha. Many local street food and vendors were selling delicacies, and the usual activities of kite flying and cricket were replaced with amusement rides and groups of people gathering.

Vesak Lights
The Vesak Festival activities included Sil observance, decorating with elaborate lanterns, flower processions, street dramas, devotional songs, and free food. Features of the Galle Face Vesak Festival included the Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone, illumination of the festival, lantern competitions, puppetry, and Dan Sal. I found the evening to be a beautiful way to experience the community coming together and sharing in the spirit of kindness and generosity. At one of the displayed I enjoyed my chat with one of the many monks in attendance.

On my second night in Colombo I walked around the Beira Lake which has a rich history and cultural significance. It was built by the Portuguese in 1596 and later renovated by the British.

Gangaramaya Temple
Usually the lake has a very serene and tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by quiet walking paths, and featuring a Seema Malakaya (a floating temple). However, the Vesak Festival brought thousands of well mannered people tonight to see all the Vesak Festival ornate decorations of colourful lanterns and vibrant digital light designs, taste the food, and listen to the music.

My walk around Beira Lake brought me to Gangaramaya Temple, which is an impressive Buddhist temple that showcases a mix of modern architecture and cultural essence.

Gangaramaya Temple
The temple's architecture features an eclectic mix of styles, including Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese. I was able to walk through several of the temple complex buildings, such as the main shrine, pagoda, Bodhi tree shrine, assembly hall, and large museum. There is also a library, vocational training centers, and residential quarters. I understand the temple is involved in community development projects, including a vocational school, orphanage, and senior citizens' home.

Gangaramaya Temple
It was good to walk around the Gangaramaya Temple museum which is home to a wide range of artifacts, including Buddha statues from around the world, Statues of Hindu gods, Ancient coins and watches, Antique collectibles and the smallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. Even old motor vehicles. The museum is a treasure trove of historical artifacts and is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, culture, and art.

My two day and two night Colombo City tour ended when I joined the Southern MICE Expo 2024 group for the first time at The Hilton Hotel for a delicious buffet lunch. It was a pity to miss out on the city tour they went on and get to know them at the start of our exciting tourism event. However, I was happy with the many things I saw and experiences I had while discovering some of the gems of Colombo's history and culture by myself.

BEIJING CAPITAL AIRLINES LAUNCHES NEW MELBOURNE ROUTE

  • Connecting Australia’s coffee capital with China’s tea capital
Beijing Capital Airlines has celebrated its inaugural flight from Hangzhou to Melbourne with an exclusive brunch at contemporary tea venue Yugen Tea Bar in South Yarra. The flight from Hangzhou landed at Melbourne Airport at 5:00am, carrying 264 passengers with the return flight back to Hangzhou departing at 7:00am.

The new route connects Australia’s coffee capital with China's tea capital. The service will operate three times per week using an Airbus A330, in addition to Beijing Capital Airline’s existing Qingdao service.

Hangzhou becomes the eighth non-stop destination in mainland China to be served from Melbourne Airport, with the additional flights taking capacity in the Chinese market back to 91 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said the extra capacity will increase opportunities for Victoria’s tourism, education and agriculture sectors.

“Hangzhou is home to around 11 million people, which is twice the size of Melbourne and is known as the tea capital of China. Mainland Chinese travellers have traditionally been one of the highest spending markets. Last year, Chinese tourists spent a total of $5.8 billion in Australia.

“It is estimated that an average daily international flight is worth around $154 million to the Victorian economy, so we know these new flights will help fill our restaurants, support our shops and give our farmers access to millions more consumers.

“China is Victoria’s largest two-way trading partner and the number one buyer of Victorian goods, with sales topping $6 billion last financial year. Today’s important new connection into mainland China will continue to help boost trade, tourism and international student growth,” she said.

“Melbourne, as the first intercontinental destination opened by Beijing Capital Airlines, marks the third intercontinental route within the same country with the launch of the Melbourne to Hangzhou route. Beijing Capital Airlines will continue to strive to support economic and cultural exchanges between China and Australia,” a Beijing Capital Airlines spokesperson said.

For more information and to view airfares, visit the Beijing Capital Airlines website.

SRI LANKA MAINTAINS A $50 VISA FEE FOR FOREIGNERS, FREE FOR INDIANS

Sri Lanka
The Sri Lankan government has announced that the $50 visa fee for a 30-day visit will remain unchanged, reversing a previous decision to double the fee to $100.

Visitors from India, China, Russia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia will continue receiving free tourist visas.

This policy reversal, announced by the President’s Office on May 6, followed backlash from local tourism stakeholders and issues at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Tourism Minister Harin Fernando opposed the additional charges imposed by VFS Global, a private company managing visa processing, and highlighted operational challenges.

The cabinet reverted to the original visa fee structure, reinstating the Department of Immigration and Emigration as the sole visa facilitator.

“The Sydney Bespoke Tours team is delighted to join Australian Wildlife Journeys, to showcase the incredible wildlife and natural attractions on Sydney's doorstep to a greater volume of travellers desiring responsible wildlife encounters,” said Managing Director of Sydney Bespoke Tours, Steve Nomchong.

With the region encompassing the Great Western Wildlife Corridor, a key migration route between the southern Blue Mountains World Heritage area and Morton National Park, guests are encouraged to contribute to several important citizen science biodiversity projects in the region being led by the Wingecarribee Shire Council. This includes the Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project, Southern Highlands Platypus Conservation Project and Glossies in the Mist Project, tracking the beautiful Glossy Black Cockatoo.

Perth Wildlife Encounters has been offering the opportunity to swim with wild Bottlenose Dolphins across the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park since 1989, when owner Terry Howson dedicated months of observation and interaction, to develop a truly wild dolphin encounter without feeding or touching the majestic creatures.

Boasting the only marine park reserve in an Australian capital city, guests can experience a myriad of wildlife above and below water via custom-built vessels, including Bottlenose Dolphins, Australian Sea-lions, Little Penguins, pelicans, Osprey, stingrays, terns and cormorants.

After an optional 50-minute bus transfer from Perth’s central business district to Rockingham, guests can choose immersive marine activities such as the Swim with Wild Dolphins experience or the 3 Islands Wildlife Snorkel which includes swimming with acrobatic and curious Australian Sea-lions. Alternatively, the Dolphin, Sea lion and Penguin Island Cruise, combines a relaxing glass-bottom wildlife cruise and guided wildlife walk on Penguin Island, providing exclusive insight into the local penguins, the spectacular landscapes and the natural history of the island.

Operating from late September through to early June, the Swim with Dolphins and 3 Islands Wildlife snorkel experiences, provide guests the opportunity to swim with marine life in small groups led by expert guides, complemented by spectacular crystal-clear water, rugged limestone coastlines, idyllic beaches and gourmet style platters including local fresh seafood served onboard the vessels.

Guests can also elect to visit Penguin Island via a five minute ferry ride from Shoalwater, where swimming, snorkelling, and exploring the nature trails are popular options. The island is a critical breeding ground for numerous seabirds and home to colonies of Little Penguins, with the region granted the highest conservation status of all penguin colonies in Australia.

“Perth Wildlife Encounters takes great pride and feels privileged to introduce guests from all over the globe to this special part of Western Australia,” said Co-Owner, Chad D’Souza.

“Our team plays a key role in managing this critical marine sanctuary, in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions (DCBA), aiming to minimise human impact on the island, increase the population of vulnerable species such as Little Penguins, while promoting environmental stewardship and education. We're excited to collaborate with fellow wildlife operators across Australia, who share our passion to achieve nature-positive outcomes," he said.

Australian Wildlife Journeys’ Executive Officer, John Daw, said both organisations were important additions for expanding the collective’s experiences across key gateways.

“Since formation, the collective has compiled an incredible mix of regional-based experiences. We are excited at the possibilities of linking our existing portfolio, with these iconic cities and aviation hubs for international travellers,” Daw said.

Enjoy the blooming beauty of Krachiao Flower Field in Chaiyaphum this June to August

Krachiao Flower Field
Picturesque fields of Siam Tulip or Dok Krachiao flowers can be seen in all their colourful beauty during this time.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would like to recommend a visit to Chaiyaphum province in Northeast Thailand, to see the beautiful scenery created by the Siam Tulip flower – or Dok Krachiao – that comes into full bloom each year at the beginning of the rainy season from June to August.

During this period, fields of the colourful flowers can be admired at the Pa Hin Ngam National Park in Thep Sathit district, and at Sai Thong National Park in Nong Bua Rawe district.

The Krachiao flowers are typically white and pink. At Sai Thong National Park, both white and pink flowers can be seen, while at Pa Hin Ngam National Park, it is only the pink flowers.

The scenery and landscapes of the Northeastern region or Isan are particularly beautiful during the rainy season or ‘green season’, and Chaiyaphum with its fields of Dok Krachiao is no exception.

Chaiyaphum is one of the prominent destinations for green season travel, as it is known for its nature. Along with the Pa Hin Ngam and Sai Thong National Parks, there are also two others – Phu Laen Kha National Park and Tat Ton National Park – as well as Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary.

Another drawcard for visitors to Chaiyaphum during this time is the ‘sea of mist’ around cliffs in the national park areas, such as Pha Hum Hot in Sai Thong National Park, Pha Sut Phaen Din in Pa Hin Ngam National Park, and Pha Hua Nak in Phu Laen Kha National Park.

Tourists wanting to visit the Park must first purchase their entrance ticket through the QueQ application before arriving at the park entrance. The park opens daily from 06.00-18.00 Hrs.

For more information, contact the TAT Nakhon Ratchasima Office on Tel. +66 (0) 4421 3030, +66 (0) 4421 3666, or email: tatsima@tat.or.th.

Kindly note that as normal practice, Thailand’s national park system closes several attractions every year for a certain period, depending on weather and park conditions. Dates are varied, and the closure is often due to extreme weather, especially during the rainy months, that may create unsafe conditions and allows for some ecological recovery time. Therefore, it is recommended that travellers find out more about the rules and regulations at each national park before visiting.
