The new digital issue of Allure Magazine will help connect international anglers to the incredible fishing opportunities we have here in Australia. Filled with great stories including heli-fishing in Darwin, saltwater fly fishing in Queensland and Western Australia, rough-luxe stays, the diversity of species and styles of fishing in Australia and much more.
Heli-Yeah! We interview helicopter pilot Ben Power about what it's like flying and fishing for a living. For the last two years, Ben has been a guide with Heli Fish in Darwin, where he flies helicopters across Australian backcountry to some of the most pristine, remote fishing locations in the country. For a guy who describes himself as a 'fisherman first, pilot second', it isn't a bad gig to land. “As a guide, it is a bit of a dream,” says the Senior Pilot. “I always say to people, you're in the barest minimum group of people that get to see this part of Australia, this piece of the Northern Territory, in all its glory. It's pretty incredible.”
From Top to Bottom looks at Australian fly fishing, in both saltwater and freshwater and why an Australian fly-fishing adventure might be your biggest challenge yet. That's the advice from Peter Broomhall, a guide for Aussie Fly Fisher based in Latrobe, Tasmania. “I always say to people that if you had to catch a fish and your life depended on it, you certainly wouldn't go fly fishing. But my belief is that fly fishing is the top of the tree, so to speak. People who started off bait and lure fishing, they're always looking for the next challenge that's out there - well, this is it. In reality trout are reasonably easy to catch on bait and lures. You're just adding an extra challenge to it, and I think it's the challenge that attracts a lot of people, to be honest.”
When Your Luck Ain't So Rough - We explore 'Rough Luxe' fishing experiences, where adventure meets comfort. These unique adventures offer anglers the best of both worlds, combining the thrill of remote locations with the comforts of luxury and experiential accommodation. From remote wilderness lodges to upscale glamping, rough luxe fishing experiences redefine what it means to embark on an unforgettable angling journey.
And we take a deep dive into Australia's Sustainable Angling practices. On any given day, Nick Milford's office might be the crystal waters of the Great Barrier Reef or the incredible atolls of the Coral Sea. He's living out many anglers' dream—a life on the water. But his purpose, and his passion, is far greater than that. “Sure, fishing culture can be a bit rednecky, but it's all about teaching and educating,” I teach kids how to be better anglers than their dads. Like, when you explain to kids that the reason a fish is thumping around on deck is because it's hot and it's burning—you immediately see their brains tick over. And you know they'll remember that for next time.”
Freshwater Folklore – We look at fly fishing for Murray cod, Australia's largest and most iconic freshwater fish. At approximately a million square kilometres, or a quarter of the continental landmass, the Murray-Darling River system is a big deal.
And finally, we answer the question of Why Australia is Unique from a fisherman who's thrown a line in on every continent, Justin Miller from the USA. “As a destination, Australia just hits different. I've fly-fished all over the planet, chasing every target species imaginable, in some incredibly remote places. Yet Australia stands out as one of the greatest and most unique adventures of my life.”
