The intricate craft of Koshu Daruma

Koshu Daruma
Koshu Daruma is one of Kofu city’s traditional crafts and can be dated back to 400 years ago in the Civil War Period.

It was made to imitate the face of Takeda Shingen, a Japanese military commander during that period.

This intricate craft is distinct for its deeply carved face with a high nose, oval shaped eyes, and eyebrows and beards shaped like cranes and turtles!

One type of Koshu Daruma is called “Koshu Oyako Daruma” (Daruma with a little child Daruma) and is an unusually rare design even in Japan.

As all of the Darumas are hand-crafted skillfully, there are not many existing craftsmen left in Kofu that make these dolls, although they are striving hard to keep the tradition alive even till today.
