The Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan

The Tottori Sand Dunes, located along the Japan Sea coast in Tottori Prefecture, consists of mounds of undulating golden sand that span roughly 16km long and 50m high, and is continually reshaped by the constant movement of the tides and coastal winds.

Inspired by this landscape, the nearby Sand Museum displays large sand sculptures by international artists, and exhibits works of various themes – typically by country or region – annually.

Past exhibits include exquisitely detailed recreations of landmarks like Angkor Wat or Neuschwanstein Castle, and the 2020 theme is Czech Republic and Slovakia.
