Your Safety & the Planet First: Post Covid-19 Sri Lanka Travel Experiences

As the world recovers from Covid-19 and countries begin to emerge from lock-downs, we're all dreaming of travel, but concerned about how to stay safe and enjoy travel in a more responsible manner. Sri Lanka has a host of experiences that are away from crowded tourist trails, leave next to zero carbon footprint and are as magical and unforgettable as the island's key iconic sites. All this will soon be accessible as our international gateway, the Colombo International Airport re-opens its doors to the world. The re-opening is scheduled for 1st August 2020.

As we open for tourism, here's what you need to know when planning a visit

Visiting Off Beat Cultural Sites
Sri Lanka is rich in historic temples and ruins. Yapahuwa, which is on route to Anuradhapura, is a multi-faceted heritage attraction in a magnificent natural setting, representing various periods of history, monastic cave dwellings, a stupa from the Anuradhapura period and tooth temple from the Middle Ages.

Visiting Lesser Known National Parks
Sri Lanka is blessed with 26 designated protected nature reserves, national parks and natural heritage sites. Parks like Yala tend to get crowded in the season with a clamour to see leopards but the good news is leopard along with other great animals like Asian elephants, sloth bear and crocodiles can be seen across so many other incredible places, like Kumana National Park or Gal Oya National Park, both of which can be combined with a trip to Passikudah or Arugambay, which are in season right now.

Bike Rides in the Hills
One of the best ways to stay in shape on holiday is to get on a bike and cycle along the areas you would otherwise visit in a vehicle. Most top hotels will offer bicycles for free or at a very nominal rate. Bike rides help you see the best of the island while in motion and away from crowds. The south of Sri Lanka and the Cultural Triangle are great places for scenic bikes rides.

Surf Lessons
Sri Lanka has some of the best beaches to learn how to surf in Asia. Gentle breaks are found from Hikkaduwa to Hiriketiya in the south and further south-east in Arugambay. Surf board rentals start from as low as USD 10 per day, possibly even less by the hour. And of course a few more dollars will get you a “one on one lesson” with the local surfing pros.

Waterfalls & Rain Forests
A waterfall experience, especially when you base yourself at a hotel like Living Heritage Koslanda is always 100% free, and in most cases completely secluded! Sri Lanka has more waterfalls than you can imagine, most located in the hill country, but you can also experience some in the south in rain forests like Sinharajah.

Tea & Mountains
A walk in the tea country is absolutely free. The clean mountain air awakens your senses and it's an experience you can do independently, while meeting smiling tea pickers along the way and stopping at shops for a taste of the island's world famous brew. There are plenty of working tea estate bungalows where you can volunteer your hands for picking tea leaves!
