The Emperor's Birthday in Japan

The Emperor’s Birthday is a holiday in Japan, as the name suggests, to celebrate the day of birth of the current Emperor.

Until 2019, the Emperor’s Birthday was celebrated on 23rd December, but due to the beginning of the era of Reiwa in line with the ascension of Emperor Naruhito, the date has been changed to 23rd February.

Since 23rd February 2020 is a Sunday which is already considered as a holiday, Monday, 24th February also became a holiday this year, which led to a 3-day weekend.

Be cautious when planning trips to Japan during this period, as various sightseeing spots throughout the country will likely be quite crowded.
