The Ministry of Tourism Cambodia presented an informative session at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2020 on Tuesday 14 January. Tourism in Cambodia is a booming business with more and more tourists discovering Cambodia as the ideal holiday destination.
International arrivals have been on the increase. In 1998 286,524 international tourists arrived. This increased to 2,125,455 in 2008 and to 6,201,077 in 2018.
Tourists are staying longer on their holidays in Cambodia. In 1998 the average length of stay was 5.20 days. This increased to 5.5 days in 2008 and 7.0 in 2018.
Hotel occupancy has increased over the past 20 years in Cambodia. In 1998 the hotel occupancy rate was 40.0%. This increased to 62.7% in 2008 and 72.2% in 2018.
International tourism receipts have increased dramatically over the past 20 years. In 1998 international tourism receipts were 166 million US dollars. This increased to 1,595 in 2008 and 4,375 in 2018.
Tourists arrive in Cambodia by air, land and sea. There are 3 international airports in Cambodia. In January to October 2019 3,711,335 international tourist arrived at the Phnom Penh International Airport; 1,725,915 at the Siem Reap International Airport and 1,362,665 at Kong Keng. By land 1,473,731arrived and by sea 111,022 arrived. These add up to 5,296,088 international tourists who arrived January to October 2019.
Tourists arrive from many countries around the world. China leads the way with 2,026,502 who arrived in January to October 2019. This was 38.3% of all tourist arrivals. The next 9 countries were Vietnam 719,687 (13.6%); Thailand 332,878 (6.3%); Lao PDR 264,243 (5.0%); Korea 203,647 (3.8%); U.S.A. 194,173 (3,7%); Japan 163,637 (3.1%); Malaysia 153,256 (2.9%); France 129,999 (2.5%) and the U.K. 128,739 (2.4%).
International tourists arriving in Cambodia from January to October 2019 came from the following world areas - Asia and the Pacific 4,388,830 82,9%, an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous year; Europe 281, 022 (-5,5%); Americas 277,181 (-6.8); Africa 10.437 ((-1.0); Middle East 4,598 (10.4)
There are many attractive regions in Cambodia for tourists. The most popular ones from January to October 2019 were Phnom Penh and surrounding areas with 3,492.081 (54.9%) tourists arriving, then Siem Reap Angkor 1,804, 997 (28.3%), Coastal areas 1,011,372 (15.9%) and Eco-tourism areas 67,009 (1.1%).
