The art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam to receive UNESCO certificate of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

On 5 May 2018, the ceremony to receive the certificate of UNESCO recognizing the art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity will take place in Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh Province.

The ceremony is organized by People’s Committee of Binh Dinh Province and Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with People’s Committees of Quang Binh Province, Quang Tri Province, Thua Thien – Hue Province, Da Nang City, Quang Nam Province, Quang Ngai Province, Phu Yen Province, and Khanh Hoa Province.

This is the occasion to honour and promote the special values of the art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam to domestic and international visitors at the same time raise the awareness of preserving and promoting the values of this cultural heritage, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of Central provinces.

At the ceremony, visitors will enjoy the art program “The echo of the art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam” with the participation of nearly 400 artisans and artists from 9 provinces/city which practice the art of Bai Choi. The program consists of 3 chapters which feature the history of the art of Bai Choi from its dawn to the current developments.

Also within the framework of the ceremony, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will announce a National Action Program to protect and promote the values of the intangible cultural heritage – the art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam.

Bai Choi is a diverse art form combining music, poetry, stage acting, painting and literature which expresses the life, mind and emotions of people in Central Viet Nam. The art of Bai Choi is a funny and intellectual folk game and also contains impromptu creativeness. It takes two main forms, namely Bai Choi games and Bai Choi performance.

On 7 December 2017, at the 12th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO held in Jeju, the Republic of Korea, the art of Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam listed on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
