Full Steam Ahead: Union Pacific Marks 150 Years in Wyoming Towns
While the Union Pacific Railroad rolled into Cheyenne, Wyoming in the early 1900s, it laid tracks in many Wyoming communities in 1868, including Laramie, Hanna, Rawlins, Rock Springs, Green River and Evanston. Celebrations and events are planned in each of these Wyoming communities, including the 150th Union Pacific Railroad Celebration at Fort Steele on July 21. The arrival of the railroad in Laramie also marks the founding of the city and to celebrate its 150 years, Laramie will be hosting a reception on May 4th at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. Additional events throughout the summer include an old-fashioned ice cream social, a model railroad on display at the Laramie Historic Train Depot and a display of historic photos at the University of Wyoming's American Heritage Center.
Trappers Point Historic Site Marks 50 Years, Pinedale
Pinedale an expansive view of some of Wyoming’s most historical sites, including the national historic landmark Green River Rendezvous site, the Green River Drift Cattle Trail and the nearby Trappers Point Archeology site—a 6,000-year-old site that’s the oldest known location used for slaughtering pronghorn antelope. Trappers Point will mark its 50th anniversary in 2018, which will be celebrated with a rededication on Thursday, July 12 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. The event will include historical presentations of the site’s earliest days.
150th Anniversary of the Fort Laramie Treaty, Fort Laramie
2018 marks the commemoration of the signing of the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. The anniversary of the signing of the treaty will be commemorated throughout 2018, with the opening program slated for April 28 and ending on November 6. Though the treaty had an adverse effect on many American Indian tribes, the anniversary is being utilized to honour the spirit of this area’s rich past and First Nations. Throughout the anniversary year, commemorative events may include traditional food-making demonstrations, opportunities to learn about the role of bison and horse in American Indian culture and history and more. In addition to the events at Fort Laramie, Fort Bridger is marking the 150th anniversary of the Second Treaty of Fort Bridger.
80 Years of Cowboying Up at the Cody Nite Rodeo, Cody
Started in 1938, the Cody Nite Rodeo is the longest running and only nightly rodeo in the world. Held nightly from June 1 – August 31, the Cody Nite Rodeo is a must-see for locals and travellers alike. It also has opportunities for kids to join in the calf scramble and experience the heart of rodeo culture. Its 80th anniversary year is expected to include the same great events, each with a celebratory twist.
Celebrating 70 Years of Wyoming’s Swedish History, Dubois
Held annually in the mountain town of Dubois, the Swedish Smorgasbord celebrates the Scandinavian tie hacks (a specialty group of loggers who would cut and limb a tree, then create railroad ties from the trees) who worked in the region’s railroad industry for more than 40 years. Held each June, the smorgasbord features traditional Scandinavian food served on a buffet.
150th Anniversary of Mining in Wyoming, South Pass City
2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the first-ever mineral claim in Wyoming, as well as the 150th anniversary of South Pass City and Atlantic City. Summer events are planned, with weekend festivities taking place in both South Pass City and Atlantic City, including Gold Rush Days in early July.
175th Anniversary of the Oregon Trail, Wyoming
2018 marks the 175th anniversary of the Oregon Trail, known as the “Pathway to the West.” More than 300,000 people travelled along the Oregon Trail on a route that passed through seven states, including Wyoming. Today, visitors can walk through history with a visit to the Guernsey Ruts, Independence Rock and Register Cliff, as well as visit the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center for hands-on exhibits.

2018 Year of Hemingway, Sheridan
Ernest Hemingway once said, "There are two places I love; Africa and Wyoming" so it comes as no surprise that 2018 will be the year of Hemingway in Wyoming. Hemingway first visited the cowboy state in 1928 and completed his novel "A Farewell to Arms" at Spear-O-Wigwam ranch in the Bighorn Mountains and posted it from Cody, Wyoming. His favourite places in Wyoming included The Historic Sheridan Inn, The Irma Hotel, Cody where his signature remains on the guest registry as well as the Cheyenne Depot. Several festivities will be taking place to honour him including Ernest Hemingway Days in Sheridan in mid-July.
