Hong Kong - A Leading Tourist Destination

Hong Kong is one of Asia’s leading holiday destinations. Each year there is an exciting year-long sequence of festivals and events that offers visitors a diverse assortment of unique traditional Chinese festivals and Western cultural celebrations.

Asia’s world city offers a fascinating living culture that combines a unique blend of Eastern and Western heritage, superb dining and unrivalled shopping. Hong Kong also offers majestic green vistas of mountains, beaches, or the multitude of outlying islands and their spectacular natural beauty.

Hong Kong is a single compact destination offering a wonderful array of festivals, events and entertainment. There is diversity, memorable contrasts and beauty at every turn.

This vibrant, dynamic city was just a “barren rock” housing a collection of fishing villages when claimed by Britain in 1842 following the first Opium War with China.

Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Nanking. The Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island were handed over in 1860 and a 99 year lease was granted in 1898 on the New Territories, comprising the area north of Kowloon up to the Shenzhen River and 233 outlying islands.

Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty on 1 July 1997, and is now a Special Administration Region of the People’s Republic of China operating under the ‘one country, two systems’ principle.

Hong Kong is now a flourishing international centre with a population of more than 7 million people. Hong Kong has a land area of 1,100 sq km and has more than 260 outlying islands, making it compact and accessible. It consists of Hong Kong Island, separated from the Kowloon Peninsula by Victoria Harbour, and the New Territories that begin north of Kowloon and extend to the mainland China boundary.

Visitors to Hong Kong can make their way through busy streets or stroll through lush greenery, with each corner bringing a surprise. People can float across the green waters as a setting sun washes skyscrapers with golden light, and immerse their selves in ancient culture and festivals.
