Get ready for a vibrant season of culture and creativity as Sydney Festival returns for its 49th edition, running from 3 January. With more than 130 events, including 22 world premieres, 24 Australian exclusives, and over 50 free experiences, this summer promises to be unforgettable.

A Grand Opening

The Festival begins with an Official Welcome at Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, followed by the spectacular debut of Animal by Cirque Alfonse at Riverside Theatres Parramatta. From breathtaking acrobatics to live music, this whimsical show is the perfect opener to a packed program.

Captivating Narratives and Show-Stopping Performances

Sydney Festival 2025 brings a mix of compelling stories and exceptional talent, offering something for everyone:

• A Model Murder: Delve into the intrigue of a true Sydney crime story, brought to life through a gripping theatrical commission.
• KATMA: Experience electrifying street dance from Sudanese choreographer Azzam Mohamed, blending cultural depth with dynamic movement.
• Siegfried and Roy: The Unauthorised Opera: Add some glitz to your summer with a taste of Las Vegas in this bold and dazzling production.

Music lovers can revel in performances from:

• Rufus Wainwright, renowned for his lush vocals and genre-defying sound.
• Detroit house legends The Music Institute, bringing the beats that shaped a movement.
• George Telek and Not Drowning, Waving, reprising their acclaimed collaboration, Tabaran.
• R&B star Yaya Bey, with her soulful and striking melodies.

The Thirsty Mile: Harbourfront Fun

Sydney Harbour transforms into a buzzing hub of activity with the return of The Thirsty Mile. Explore:

• Free live music to set the summer mood.
• The vibrant Tongpop bar, a colorful space to unwind.
• Sunrise Yoga, a serene way to start your day.
• The family-friendly Colour Maze, an immersive art installation that promises fun for all ages.

Themes That Resonate

This year’s program delves into profound themes of birth, destiny, and legacy, guided by Visual Artist in Residence Telly Tuita. With works like Dark Noon and Multiple Bad Things, audiences can expect thought-provoking explorations of the human condition.

Blak Out: Amplifying First Nations Voices

Sydney Festival proudly celebrates First Nations culture with its Blak Out program, curated by Jacob Nash. Highlights include:

• Vigil: Gunyah, a month-long gathering for workshops, performances, and discussions.
• The premiere of Plant a Promise, a powerful piece focusing on sustainability and community.
• Other standout events like Jacky and Redfern Renaissance, showcasing the creativity and resilience of First Nations artists.
