Savannakhet, a province in Laos, is increasing its efforts to promote its rich cultural heritage, natural attractions, and local way of life to tourists. The province has become a vibrant destination, offering safe, engaging activities that showcase its unique charm and draw both local and international visitors.

In 2024, Savannakhet saw a 26% increase in tourist arrivals compared to 2023, according to the Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism (DICT). This success is the result of ongoing improvements in tourism services and the development of new products designed to appeal to a wide range of travelers.

Exploring Savannakhet’s Rich Offerings

Savannakhet is home to 79 natural tourism sites, 13 historical landmarks, and 24 cultural attractions, making it an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and cultural explorers alike. Visitors are drawn to key sites such as the Dinosaur Museum, Lom Swamp, Dongnatad Forest, and the Tad Phalong and Salen waterfalls, while ancient stone structures add an air of mystery to the region.

For those interested in wildlife, organized treks through Savannakhet’s protected areas offer opportunities to spot diverse species in their natural habitats. The province is also home to the Xayyaphoum and Taleo temples, the Ho Tay Pidok manuscript repository, and villages inhabited by the Phouthay ethnic group.

Savannakhet’s tourism infrastructure has expanded to meet growing demand. The province offers 49 hotels, 172 guesthouses, two resorts, 168 restaurants, seven entertainment venues, and 12 tour companies employing 49 guides. This strong foundation allows the region to provide diverse accommodations and services for visitors.

As part of the "Visit Laos Year 2024" campaign, the DICT has organized 88 events across 14 towns and one city in Savannakhet, showcasing the province’s traditions, culture, and the vibrant lifestyle of its people. These events highlight the local heritage while drawing attention to the province’s tourism offerings.

Governor's Vision for the Future

Bounchom Ubonpaseuth, the Governor of Savannakhet, emphasized the province’s potential for further tourism growth, noting investments in infrastructure and encouragement of both domestic and foreign investment in tourism-related businesses. He highlighted the province’s unique appeal, with attractions such as the old town of Savannakhet, which preserves remnants of French colonial architecture, and its picturesque forests and rich cultural traditions.

The governor expressed optimism that expanding tourism would contribute to Savannakhet’s economic growth and enhance regional cooperation along the Mekong River, positioning the province as an even more prominent destination on the global tourism map.
