Women Dive for Shellfish

At Amagoya (Women Divers Hut) seafood experience in Mie Prefecture, meet the Ama: a group of women who can dive into the sea for about 50 seconds without oxygen, to catch shellfish or seaweeds!

Their main catch usually consists of shellfish like abalone or Ise lobsters, and to prevent extinction, they are not caught until they have grown.

 
Here, you will have the Ama cook the freshly caught shellfish for you at the hearth of the hut and serve it sizzling hot on a wire net, while you listen to the stories and diving experiences from the elderly Ama.
