MYANMAR’S DREAM TO RECEIVE 5 MILLION TOURISTS BLOWN AWAY BY COVID-19

U Ohn Maung, Union Minister of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, said that Myanmar’s dream of receiving five million tourists in 2020 was blown away by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Myanmar was on its track to receive over five million tourists in 2020 for the first time in its history. However, the pandemic has halted the global tourism business and our ministry has to develop and adopt Myanmar Tourism Rescue Plan, to relieve the impacts the impact of the tourism business instead of doing tourism promotion activities,” he said.

To remedy the situation, the ministry launched a series of crash training, low-interest loans, license fee exemption for one year, rescheduling the due date for payment, and cutting the leasing fees by 50 percent.

“We are working on the program call “Enchanting Myanmar Health and Safety Protocol for Safe Tourism Myanmar, to convince international travelers that Myanmar is safe to travel in post-covid time,” the minister said.

Moreover, the ministry will also develop and implement Myanmar Tourism Strategic Recovery Roadmap (2020-2025)  to relieve the impact on the tourism business and help return to the normal condition in 2023-2025.
