Road trips in the UK

Cardigan Bay
Lexus UK is suggesting road trips around England, Scotland and Wales

The Coastal Way
West Wales
Stretching the entire length of Cardigan Bay, the Coastal Way is 290km past deserted beaches and the chance to take dolphin safaris, forest foraging tours and kayaking.

The Cardigan Bay coast is dotted with towns and villages such as Cardigan, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Aberdovey.

Snow Roads Scenic Route
Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.A journey along Britain’s highest public road, this 144km route reveals some of the Highlands’ most beautiful scenery. From Blairgowrie, the A93 wends northwards, and the A939 from Ballater takes in traditional towns, crumbling castles and the Cairnwell chairlift (open all year, for skiers and hikers alike) before ending in Grantown-on-Spey.

North Coast 500
North Coast 500
North Scotland
This circular route starts in Inverness and heads for northern Scotland’s untrammelled shore, through Muir of Ord, Applecross, Ullapool, John O’Groats, Wick, Dunrobin Castle and Dingwall, before returning to Inverness. The official route traverses 830km of winding back-roads, wind-whipped beaches, and remote rural communities, though we also recommend a detour to the Isle of Skye, to spy the otherworldly Storr rocks.

South West Coastal 300
Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
Dumfries is the starting point for this 482km loop that takes in sea views, medieval castles and the chance for angling, hiking and horse riding.

The route can be accessed from major routes including the M74 and M77 and takes in Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, as well as passing through Wanlockhead, in the Lowther Hills.

The Atlantic Highway
The Atlantic Highway
Devon and Cornwall, England
A coastal road trip between Barnstaple (Devon) and Newquay (Cornwall) along the A39 and A3059 offers 122km of beaches, dramatic clifftops and surf. From Newquay the A3075 and A30 is another 67km to Land’s End, the most westerly tip of mainland Britain.

Kendal to Keswick
Cumbria, England

Encompassing the best of the Lake District in one 62km drive, this route on the A591
runs along the banks of Lake Windermere and Thirlmere. It then takes in the Lakeland fells, slicing through countryside that has inspired artists and writers. The village of Grasmere is where William Wordsworth, lived there for 14 years, called it “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found”.

Cheddar Gorge
Somerset, England
Cheddar’s soaring limestone cliffs make this 30km route on the B3135 memorable. Craggy bluffs hug the roadside drive from Bridgwater to Cheddar Gorge. Take the A372 east from Bridgwater, then the A361 north-east, before joining the B3131 and on to the B3135.

Ribblehead Viaduct
Ribblehead Viaduct
Yorkshire, England
The village of Hornby to the Ribblehead Viaduct, along the A683, A687 and B6255 takes in the Yorkshire’s Dales, with wild woodlands and pitted peaks along with lush, grassy valleys. This 25km trip ends beneath the 400-metre-high viaduct, whose arches and honeyed stone have stood strong since the 1800s. Further on, the Buttertubs Pass (11km, between Thwaite and Hawes) features thrilling descents and hairpins aplenty.
