Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits

July delivers your last chance to visit Tudors to Windsors, an exhibition tracing the history the British monarchy through the outstanding collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. It highlights major events in British (and world) history from the sixteenth century to the present, examining the ways in which royal portraits were impacted by both the personalities of individual monarchs and wider historical change. Presenting some of the most significant royal portraits, the exhibition will explore five royal dynasties: the Tudors, the Stuarts, the Georgians, the Victorians and the Windsors shedding light on key figures and important historical moments. This exhibition also offers insight into the development of British art including works by the most important artists to have worked in Britain, from Sir Peter Lely and Sir Godfrey Kneller to Cecil Beaton and Annie Liebovitz. To bring these royal figures to life, Bendigo Art Gallery has secured key loans of historic fashion, armour and personal effects which will be featured alongside these magnificent and imposing portraits. Ballarat Winter Festival

As the weather cools down, the Ballarat Winter Festival heats up with a unique array of events and activities celebrating this most wonderful time of the year. Events include Winter Wonderlights at Sovereign Hill, Winteractive Arcade and the inaugural Ballarat Activated ArtWalk, which will bring six special artworks to life that look at the stories beneath the surface of the city and of the people that have lived, loved and continue to make the tales of Ballarat. Come From Away

Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Tastes of Central Geelong

Finders Keepers
12-14 July
Set to return to the glorious Royal Exhibition Building, visitors will discover over 200 stalls at Finders Keepers. Featuring unique work from local and interstate makers, designers and artists plus food and entertainment all weekend, the three-day event includes a happy hour at the bar on the opening day and shopping into the evening as the event remains open until 9:00pm. The market magic then continues Saturday and Sunday 10:00am to 5:00pm. Join in supporting small creative business and come along to find, seek, love and keep this winter. Island Whale Festival
5-7 July
Celebrate the arrival of some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures as Phillip Island's coastal waters play host to the annual migration of Humpback and Southern Right whales. The Island Whale Festival provides a wonderful opportunity to dive into this immersive and educational three-day event. There are many free or low-cost activities throughout the school holidays including climbing into the belly of a 19-metre inflatable whale, checking out a marine wildlife photo exhibition and workshop, whale-spotting with an expert, or attending an info session on marine research or plastic reduction. Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival
19-21 July
The Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival is an annual three-day celebration held at the iconic Theatre Royal in Castlemaine, mainland Australia’s longest continuously operating cinema. Curated by dual Emmy Award-winning director, Geoffrey Smith, the Festival features a selection of enriching and thought-provoking stories of the world and post screening discussions with filmmakers, to uncover the stories behind the stories. Audiences explore fascinating worlds and cultures together, bringing them face to face with real-life characters, real-life stories and real-world issues. The Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival draws its program from the best of feature-length documentary films globally and showcases Australian film makers. The Weekend puts a spotlight on the unique spaces and places that form the foundation of Melbourne, providing an opportunity to consider what makes Melbourne unique. Having captivated over half a million patrons worldwide, Random International’s monumental artwork, Rain Room, finally makes its Southern Hemisphere debut-premiering in Melbourne, for a limited time only. Following blockbuster showings in London (Barbican), New York (MoMA), Los Angeles (LACMA), and Shanghai (Yuz Museum), Rain Room invites attendees to walk through a downpour of continuous rain without getting wet. Motion sensors detect the movements of the human body as visitors navigate through the darkened space, becoming performers in this intersection of art, technology and nature.
