A free shuttle bus which will transport visitors on a convenient loop from easy parking areas to some of Canberra's most loved cultural attractions and places of interest has been announced.
The Culture Loop shuttle bus is a joint six-month pilot venture among 10 organisations and will run seven days a week from 9am to 5pm with nine conveniently situated stops.
The bus route will include stops at: the National Museum of Australia (NMA); National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA); Regatta Point, home to the NCA's National Capital Exhibition and VisitCanberra's Canberra and Region Visitor Centre; National Library of Australia (NLA), Questacon; Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) at Old Parliament House; Australian Parliament House (APH); Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG); and the Canberra Centre.
The shuttle bus, which will take about one hour for a round trip, took to the road for the first time on Thursday 20 December, at 9am from CMAG.
Visitors can park once and ride the shuttle to their favourite venues and experience an array of exhibitions, galleries, collections, stories and events.
Liberal Senator for the ACT and Federal Assistant Minister for Treasury and Finance, Zed Seselja, said “This is a welcome addition to Canberra's transport facilities, supporting our increasing numbers of tourists, nationally and internationally, in the nation's capital.”
Dr Mathew Trinca, director of the National Museum of Australia which has led the Culture Loop initiative, said it was encouraging to see institutions working together to promote Canberra.
“We are delighted to be at the forefront of this unprecedented collaboration between the cultural institutions and other organisations to improve the visitor experience in Canberra,” Dr Trinca said.
Chief executive of the NCA, Sally Barnes, said the Culture Loop will link the cultural institutions within the Parliamentary Triangle providing a great service for those visiting the national capital.
“We are excited to work with the NMA and other institutions to bring more visitors into the Parliamentary Triangle and to share the brand new National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point which tells the story of Canberra's past, present and future,” Ms Barnes said.
David Marshall, Chair of the Canberra Region Tourism Leaders Forum, said: “This Culture Loop shuttle bus will enable visitors to travel between most of the national institutions with ease, and without cost. It is a wonderful initiative which will be wholeheartedly welcomed by many visitors to the National Capital wishing to explore our national icons.”
The Culture Loop service will be provided by Capital Touring Services Pty Ltd.
The bus has a seating capacity of 39 people (plus 22 standing) with wheelchair access, air conditioning, front and centre double doors, and accessibility for people using mobility aids
