At the ECC, the elephants have more than 500 hectares of forest to socialise in and have the opportunity to breed.
Elephants are extremely social animals. In the wild, they live in close knit family groups of females and youngsters.
We want our elephants to live in conditions as close to the wild as possible. The goal is to eventually reintroduce them into the wild, so they would have to be prepared. We need to know the character of each elephant and figure out who we can pair them with. They need to spend time together within a socially coherent group and build a relationship of trust.
Our team works actively to increase the number of elephant births in Laos to conserve a healthy and sustainable population of this highly endangered species. We now have at least one pregnant elephant. The delivery is expected in November 2019. We will know at the beginning of January if others females are pregnant too thanks to our cooperation with Christopher Stremme, our veterinarian that regularly comes to the ECC to check on our elephant herd.
