A bumper 15-day program launches this Saturday (13 May), showcasing the best of Pyrmont and the Mudgee region’s food, wine, art and entertainment.
For the first time the festival will feature a beer garden at Pirrama Park, serving some of Sydney’s best locally brewed craft beers, while a pop-up version of the Pyrmont Growers Market will offer visitors a range of local delicacies.
The City of Sydney continues its support of the Pyrmont Festival in 2017 with a $50,000 cash grant and $6,000 in-kind support to help the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce to run and promote the festival in association with Mudgee Region Tourism, Mid Western Regional Council and the Mudgee Wine Association.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the festival was an example of successful community, business and industry collaboration.
“The Pyrmont Festival has become a popular fixture on Sydney’s annual event calendar and we’re proud to get behind this event for country producers and city businesses,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Mudgee is one of the state’s oldest wine regions and well-known for its fantastic food, fine art, music, nature and history.
“It’s a region perfectly matched with Pyrmont, an inner-city precinct that’s become one of Sydney’s fastest-growing cultural and dining destinations.”
A highlight of the festival will be the free-entry, two-day family event at Pirrama Park on Saturday 20 May and Sunday 21 May with live performances, rides, children’s entertainment, exhibitions and around 100 stalls presenting Mudgee wines and food tastings from 30 wineries and 14 produce exhibitors.
As part of the festival local restaurants, wine bars and hotels featuring special degustation menus prepared by Pyrmont’s top chefs and paired with wines selected from boutique Mudgee wineries.
This year 30 sculptures from Mudgee artists will be on show and for sale. There will also be a photo exhibition, art displays and the Pyrmont Art Prize for local professional and student artists.
Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce co-president, Erica Reynolds, said the festival highlighted Pyrmont’s position as one of Sydney’s premier creative hubs.
“For seven years the Pyrmont Ultimo Chamber of Commerce has invited the Mudgee Wine Region to offer the area’s independently owned, high quality wines in Pirrama Park,” Ms Reynolds said.
“We look forward to also showcasing independent craft breweries at our popular event this year beside Mudgee’s outstanding range of wines.”
Cara George, CEO of Mudgee Region Tourism, said the Pyrmont Festival was a wonderful opportunity for Sydneysiders to connect with the Mudgee region.
“We are delighted to participate in the festival and we’re looking forward to showcasing our region’s finest,” Ms George said.
“By providing a taste of the Mudgee Region in the heart of Pyrmont at this iconic event, we have seen excellent growth in visitation with many Sydneysiders taking the three-and-a-half hour driven north-west to reset their senses with a short break.”
