House-made ice cream earns MCEC pastry team ‘Best in Class’ at 2016 AFA

Melbourne Convention and Exhibitions Centre’s (MCEC) pastry team has added another sweep of accolades to an ever-growing list, with six medals and a ‘Best in Class’ honour awarded at Australia’s leading national food awards.

The 2016 Australian Food Awards, which recognise premium Australian products and produce, awarded MCEC two gold, two silver and two bronze medals for a range of house-made products, with a ‘Best in Class’ for a mouth-watering hazelnut ice cream.

MCEC Executive Pastry Chef, Alessandro Bartesaghi credits the talent and passion within the team for its continuous ability to deliver award-winning products.

“I’m incredibly lucky to have such a skilled, creative and driven team working beside me, who believe in delivering the best possible product they can,” Mr Bartesaghi said.

“Innovation and experimentation is definitely the key to success. Our hazelnut ice cream is one of our new products, so for it to receive a ‘Best in Class’ shows we’re certainly on the right track.”

MCEC’s awarded products included:
  • Gold: Hazelnut ice cream (‘Best in Class’) and torrone confectionary
  • Silver: House-made vanilla yoghurt and very berry sorbet
  • Bronze: Mango and lime sorbet and pink grapefruit sorbet

“We want to continue to evolve our products, push boundaries and constantly surprise our customers and visitors when they attend an event at MCEC.

“Many people often ask why we bother to produce our own products in-house, and this is why – because we’re creating some of the best in Australia,” Mr Bartesaghi added.

MCEC’s hazelnut ice cream is now in the running for Champion Dairy Product at the 2016 Australian Food Awards Championships, held at Melbourne Show Grounds on Thursday 8 September.

A range of MCEC’s house-made products are available for purchase from the newly opened Shed Café, located at the Clarendon Street entrance of the Exhibition Centre, with plans to introduce the award-winning ice creams and sorbets in the summer months ahead.
